If Your X-box Is Fragging With The Chip In...
« on: December 07, 2004, 08:24:00 PM »

I bought the X-Chip from eb2k, and I have a version 1.6 X-Box.  I had to rebuild the LPC and use the pinheader installation method.  For those of you with a version 1.6 X-Box, I'm sure you are familiar with this too.

I installed the chip, wired it all up, double checked all my connections...  even used a multimeter to check continuity with the points, everything was fine.

I turned on the X-Box, the power light turned green, hard drive spun up... then quickly shut off... turned back on again.... turned off.... then came back up one last time with the LED alternating green and red (AKA Frag).

I won't get into how I've taken it apart and back together re-inspecting everything over and over again.  Then I came here, read the forum, and read that I should flash the chip.

I hooked it up to my computers USB port.... "USB Device Found".  I went to install the drivers... and it failed.   I tried a few things on my computer to get it to work, but no luck.  I later tried it hooked up to my laptop, and amazingly, it worked just fine.

Afterwards, I flashed the chip with the .bin file that comes with X-Control.   Tried booting up the X-box, no luck.

I then tried soldering the D0 wire to the top location instead of the alternat D0 frame rail on the bottom..... still no luck.

I then went on IRC and hit up #EvolutionX on Efnet, and found my solution.  I got access to a few files, and saw a folder called "x-chip". I looked in it and found another folder called "EvoX_X-CHIP_BIOS_V1.3".  Inside that folder was an interesting file, "xchip_v1.3-1.6box_only.bin".  I downloaded it, opened up X-control, flashed my X-Chip, booted up the X-Box.... AND IT WORKED!!!!!!!!

It was such a great relief to know that my X-Box or X-Chip wasn't fried or damaged.

For those of you with newer X-Boxes, I'm pretty sure that the default Cromwell BIOS that's on there will not work.  You will have to update it with something that will work for the version 1.6 X- Box.

I hope this helps somebody,  it took me quite a while to figure this out, I even tried searching this board with no avail, everyone kept pointing out the D0 wire as the culprit, but that wasn't it in my case.  I even tried the "nickel trick" to ensure a better connection, but that didn't help either.

Yeah this Evox X-Chip Bios v.1.3 is great but it still takes away your "parental" options in the M$ Dash.  Many folks say that it doesn't but it does seriously.  I would love to have all my controls at my fingertips Mr. Andersen!

Alright after looking at it for a while I realized its identical to a USB printer cable and went out and bought one for $15.  Got everything flashed, I installed Slayer's Auto Installer 2.6, and have completed backing up 5 games onto my 120GB HDD.

Thanks for all the help (basically this entire forum is a life saver).

I had the same problem.  I thought it was my soldering for hours and kept rechecking my work.  I even had to go and visit a friend of a friend to have my work verified.  If your xbox lights up green then shuts off then lights up green and then shuts of and then lights up green again and then blinks green and red over and over then bios described above will solve your problem.

*****It is important to note that after I got this to work I was unplugging the xbox and I accidentally static shocked the usb connector for the xchip.  This resulted in the same three reboot then frag issue.  I had to reflash the bios via the USB port again.  Make sure you watch out for static.

What a long day....  Modding a 1.6 xbox is no easy task, that took a lot of precision and A LOT of research.  Just a word of caution to those considering it.
