Has anyone done this yet?

For that matter, is it possible to run the dashboard from a cd, enabling one to use the exploit in the first place?

Dashboard has been signed by M$ and contains media flags that only allow it to boot from HDD. If you try to alter these settings, you invalidate the signature so that a bog standard/original M$ retail bios won't boot it. The only way you could boot a "patched" dashboard is with a modchip/exploit.

It wouldn't work (with our current knowledge of the xbox signing and authentification) because in order to load such a CD-R/RW (or DVD-R/RW), the XBOX would need to be either modded or exploited to boot a different dashboard. The Free-X exploit only works because 007 and Mech Assault do a crappy job at authenticating saves and this allows homebrewed software to load, and only off of the harddrive. Sorry, but this idea is still a long way off.
