Guide To Installing Free-x/evox Using Xlinux
« on: January 01, 2004, 04:14:00 PM »

I get a wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1 error when I type the command mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /cdrive/.  I figured it was because my c drive is partitioned in ntfs format. So then I put the bert files on my e drive which is fat32 and got to the same step and typed mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /edrive/ but i still get the same error message. What am I doing wrong here?

I have used this tutorial and thought I did everything to the "T". But I haven't i guess I went to reboot my xbox after doing everything and it loads the funky bubbling xbox logo and then it looks like it wants to go into the menu system then it goes to good ole error 21. I tried to reboot it a few times with no luck. I decided to go back into the setup for xlinux and try to redo things but the drive seems to be in some type of lock. xlinux says it has unlocked something but you can locate the drive to mount it anymore once you get to the prompt. Hdc51 is gone. If anyone can help me to fix this i would be very grateful.

ok I found i couldnt mount my hard drive due to it being ntfs, so I burned everything to a sperate cd and tried mounting that, i get no error but when i boot my xbox (this is after i go through everything the tut says.) it comes up with the xbox logo. MS comes up under it like it has found something but then it goes to the service screen (error 21). I think i might have to do something different since im working off cd and not the hd. Can someone please post the steps and commands required to use a cd with the hacks instead of the hd? I am a complete n00b when it comes to linux.

Okay, I got everything now, and my versions are

Xbox =1.1
Dash = 5659
Kernel =5101

I know I'm way off what has worked for you, but lets see if it works on these versions and more people will know what versions this works on...

all I need to know is, do I need Evox X ? If so, Do I copy it as well with Xlinux commands or what?

MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS..

1. Is the PC on when I connect the xbox hdd up to it?uhh.gif

2. Do I leave the power cable from the xbox in the xbox hdd and take out only the ide cable? and trail my pc's ide cable from there to the xbox hdd while the hdd is still powered on by the Xbox.?uhh.gif

If anyone could answer any of these questions I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks for this tutorial in advance and any replies..

Actually I got this working. My problem was my msdash was the latest and couldnt do the exploit. I had to downgrade my dash first (downloaded it from a person with a moded box) before I could do it. To do this I burned the downgrade to a cd, hotswaped my hard drive, then I mounted my hard drive and cdrom using xliunx.

In order to mount a cdrom this is what i had to do to mount
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /cdrom

to mount the xbox drive I had to...
mkdir /xbox
mount -t FATX /dev/hdc51 /xbox

Once they were mounted I went to my CDrom
cd /cdrom

And copied all the dash files over to my xbox HD
cp -rf * /xbox

This ovewrites all of the newer dash files with older ones. Then I put my xbox Hardrive back in the Xbox and started it back up. It came up with the downgraded dash. I then Uses Return to Castle Wolfenstein to upgrade to he dash just like in the tutorial. These are the steps I took to transform the Xbox into a HaxBox. I used the Pheonix Bios loader with bert and ernie .xtf files.

mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /cdrom

mkdir /xbox
mount -t FATX /dev/hdc51 /xbox

cd /xbox/fonts
Rename Xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf files

This copies hack to xbox
cd /cdrom
cp -rf  * /xbox (i think this is the command to copy correct me if im wronge)

move bert and ernie to your fonts folder (no need to rename them) then unmount all drives.
put hd back in xbox and reeboot xbox.

You should now be looking at the evox screen.

I have the newest dash as well and a version 1.0 kernel 4043 xbox. Just today i put in Splinter cell and went to the downloads part. It updated my dashboard but since i had my xbox hooked up to my lan which has an internet connection, it downloaded the latest dash from the net. I dont know anyone with a modded xbox so im not sure what to do. Are the older dashboard files small enough to email? All your help is greatyl appreciated. Ive spents hours trying every method and reading every tutorial with no luck. If only hdd driver would bloody work! Is there any exploit which would work on the newest dash? Thanks in advance.

No no exploits will work with the newest MS dash, and the old msdash files are about 40mb with audio files ziped (well the ones sent to me were). Im not sure where to get the dash files except for slayers disk. I do not know where to get slayers disc though. I believe I saw an original msdash download in the THC hacked dash irc channel.

The exploit I planned on doing was the splinter cell savegame exploit. It seemed simple enough. Only problem is the invalid file size error in hdd driver. I even tried using a hex editor in order to get the driver read by hdd driver but that didnt work. I guess this is because of the new dash. So the only thing left i can do is somehow downgrade my dash? Once you have the file, could you just copy it over in xlinux? If so, i suppose i could copy the savegame exploit from xlinux as well. xlinux seems like my only option when it comes to manipulating the xbox harddrive. Would doing the xlinux method above succesfully mod my xbox? Thanks for your help KYLE_A

Wow, after 4 days of having nothing but hassles I finally got it working! I downloaded Slayers disc and extracted the dashboard files from the ISO. I then used XLinux to copy them over. I copied bert.xtf and snufflapagus.xtf to the fonts directory and copied default.xbe, evox.ini, and a skins folder to the C: of the XBOX. All those files came from Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Phoenix_Project.rar. Now when I turn on the Xbox I get to the Phoenix Evox screen. I guess the hard part is all done now. One question, Can I use Slayers disc to rebuild and set up my drives or do i need a modchip installed for that?

Hey guys.. im having some trouble using xlinux. i accidently overwrited some files on my xbox using xlinux. The files I overwrited was Xbox Book.xtf, Xbox.xtf. They are switched with my bert.xtf and ernie.xtf and renamed alrdy. BOTH of them were screwed  up.

The one in my fonts folder and the one in my main xbox directory are both exploits xtf's. The problem with this is that the main directory of the xbox is suppose to have the original xtf's (i think) and the fonts directory is suppose to have the xploited xtf's. To make things short...

I downloaded slayers, and extracted the iso, then using the supplied Xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf, i extracted them to my xbox hdd in the main directory...BUT...

After that, i went to the fonts folder and i c all these files and crap and i cant delete them...Its all the exploit files that i couldtn delete becuase it wouldnt let me since it says its a directory not a file...  but it is a file... Seeing that is i'll show u the layout in my fonts folder on my xbox...

Fonts>Xbox.xtf, Xbox Book.xtf, Xbox.xtf, bert.xtf, ernie.xtf....

since theres all those xtf files... i found out that u dont have to rename the bert and ernie files since they are xtf files and the XBOX SEARCHES FOR XTF FILES...
This means that i cant get the exploit working if i cant delete those files cuz it says they are directories....

So im thinking is there a way in xlinux where there is such a command that well enable u to delete the fonts folder in the xbox hdd???

i cant rename the files either cuz it give me that stupid crap where its not a file, its a directory ( that aint what exactly it says but close enough)

so if anyone knows the commands to delete a folder using xlinux, no matter what is in the folder....????

Same Problem here... Help please I can still play games but if there is no Game in the drive it just keeps rebooting or somehting.  Like G_David said I have extra xtf files in my font directory and they wont delete.
