If you really want full functionality, a modchip or split TSOP is the way to go.

As for getting on irc, #xbins is only invite only when the channel is flooded, and only last for a few minutes.  #xbins4newbies is closed, so come see us in #xbins-help (but dont expect help with the exploits).  xbins and usenet are your best bet for the files.

If you get a copy of 007 AUF, you can just load the hacked save which boots Evox dash manually on your 1.3 Xbox.

With this alone, you can FTP to the Xbox and that's about it. It does make it useful for copying game saves with the Xbox Saves Manager from www.xboxsaves.com, or for copying soundtracks over to the Xbox from your PC.

But, if you use xbedumpwin32.exe, you can sign any .xbe (think .exe) you want to run from Evox, like games, homebrew apps, emulators etc.

So, you don't need a mod chip to do mod type stuff with a safe exploit with a 1.3 Xbox, but you will have to sign every .xbe you use. You will also be limited to running .xbe's from your hard drive only.

The free-x font hack and the audio database hack are a bit more risky, but they just eliminate the need to load EvoX with 007 AUF every time.

Ah yes. I spent a few hours on #xbins-help today and found the answers I was looking for. Great channel.

Thanks for the help.
