I have tried every dash I have and it works with the hex-edited xboxdash.xbe to load the modified extension for fonts as .xft. Old 3944 dash, 4920 dash and the latest 4920 dash update.
My tests here all involve the latest 4920 dash update from XBLive and 3944 BIOS.
The only modification I made to the original dash is to rename the xodash folder to xodashbak. Doing so removes the XBLive menu tab from the dashboard (if you try to run it will cause error because that xbe is not signed - no reason to want to run it anyways).
I am using the original free-x bert and ernie and latest evox 3752. I renamed the font files in fonts folder only, and but bert and ernie there. I did not touch the xtf in the root of C:.
I hex-edited a copy of the xboxdash.xbe and renamed it to msxboxdash.xbe
I set both of those settings in evox.ini to yes (cant remember the lines exactly) so it is supposed to launch the dashboard if the clock is not set. I also set the dashboard in evox.ini to msxboxdash.xbe
I left the xbox unplugged all night.
When I turned it on this morning it went into evox, but I noticed a brief split-second animation of original dashboard quickly which I do not normally see, then evox comes up (date is all incorrect) I turned off/on several times and seen this same animation flicker. I then ran the dashboard from evox and set the clock. It did not jump to the clock setting, but rather to the normal dash menu. Next time I turn on xbox I do not see this flicker of animation. It seems that the dash is started to go into clock menu with a flag on bootup only, and this flicker of animation was most likely the clock setting I was seeing but bert & ernie did their thing and launched evox. The reason I say this is that when I launched dashboard from evox, it did not start at the clock setting menu.
So basically evox did not detect and launch msxboxdash.xbe to set the clock like I expected. But at least I can set the clock.
I did not experience the looping problem that some people have. Maybe it depends on the dashboard version and this latest one is immune?!? I did not try to launch a DVD though - I will try later when I get home because xbox has been unplugged all day. I will try to launch original 007 or something right from the start when I turn it on, and I will report back my findings.
I will also try the Bert is cheating on Ernie and see if that has looping problem after clock needs resetting. Some say it does, some say it doesn't. Some say that Complex does, some say Evox does... there is so much conflicting stories it would be nice to get to the bottom of this. I also want to try all tests with 4034 BIOS, and with newer BIOS to see if that makes a difference.
The only problem is it takes so long to discharge the capacitor in the Xbox to test the clock problem. Anyone know how to remove/disable it so I can do quicker tests?
