Plain English Free-x/evox Tutorial
« Reply #135 on: July 27, 2003, 10:59:00 AM »

K Naladge... Mad props go out to you.

I'm having a problem running applications from evox on an unmodded box.

I can run linux from the evox menu but I can't run anything else (see 4 below for further details).

Below you will find a detailed description of the steps that I have taken and the problems that I have encountered.

Can I run "unofficial" applications without a modchip?

Here is what I am trying to accomplish.

1) Install evox using Bert / Ernie so that it boots every time...
Thanks to Knaladge I've been able to do that without a hitch.  Nice Tutorial.

2) My Xbox seems to reset the clock a lot.  As a result I uninstalled the perminant install of evox and (for now) I am using the 007 exploit every time.  I'd like to setup the Original Dashboard so that it is accessable from the evox menu and that way I can perminantly install evox and, should the clock fail, I can fix it easily.   I found a link on this forum to another tutorial to do that...

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=ST&f=45&t=74036

Haven't tried yet but it seems like it will work.

3) Install linux.  I've succeeded at this already and I am able to get it to load from evox without much trouble.  I simply added an "Item" line to the "Apps" section of the evox.ini that looks like:

Item "Linux","e:\LinuxLoader\default.xbe"

and that works fine.  Interesting to note though, if I browse down in the launch menu to the "E" drive and I select the Auto Items entry for linux that is there it doesn't boot.  I get a 21 error and I have to reboot (manually) the X-Box

regardless though... it looks like I'm headed in the right direction.

4) I'd like to be able to run other software from evox.  I'm not all that interested in "Backed Up" games.  I AM however interested in XBMP and some of the emulators (it would be cool to wow my non-geek friends with NES games).  In addition there seems to be a bunch of games (Doom, Duke3D, ROTT, Quake2) that will run on the XBOX.

Now I downloaded Quake2 and ROTT and copied them to the Xbox on drive E.  Then I added item tags in the "games" section of the evox.ini that look like this:

Item "RottX","e:\RiseOfTheTriadX\default.xbe"
Item "Quake2X","e:\Quake2X\default.xbe"

I rebooted the Xbox and loaded evox using the 007 exploit.

Sure enough in my Launch menu there are entries under games for RottX and Quake2X.  When I select either one of these I get the error 21 (the one you see if you try to run the 007 exploit off of the memory card).  hrumph

I thought that I might need to sign the xbe's that were being used so I used xbedump (THANKS GOUKI, YOU GOT ME STARTED)  and signed them.  The I ftp'd them to the xbox and rebooted.  I ran the exploit and got to evox and then tried to launch but I got the same error.

Any help that can be afforded would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

In the tutorial, it says you need to have the 4034 kernal, is that true?  I have the 4817 kernal.  Can I use the Bert and Ernie Reloaded files instead?

COOL!!! The authors of this software are geniuses!  I got this to work on my K:5101 D:4920.

I followed the tutorial, except I had a problem....I kept on getting the black screen of death.  I finially fixed the problem....this is how:

-Used Complete Signed version of Phoenix 1.3
-Threw out the default.xbe
-downloaded the ORIGINAL Phoenix 1.3
-Signed the default.xbe with the font key (xbedump default.xbe -font)
-Took the output file (out.xbe) renamed it default.xbe
-Copied the all of the files to the xbox hard drive including the NEW default.xbe

After this, the phoenix loader starts every time which in turn starts revox.
It may not be apparent to some, but the phoenix loader in this package loads
the X2-4977 bios.  This should let you play anything you want without having to
sign all of the other sofware that you want to run.

Hope this may help someone else since it took me a LONG time to get this going!

@K-Naledge

Thanks for your tutorial, it worked fine for me on an 1.0 box. However, I'd like you to add some additional info to it: two friends of mine have modded Xboxes that are unable to boot the original MS Dashboard, thus I was unable to put the hacked savegame of 007 onto the memory card!

We thought we were boned until we asked on IRC and someone told us about the XBox-Saves Manager. We could use this tool to connect from the PC to the modded xbox and fill up the memory card from there. Quite useful...

Just to show it's a newbie thread:
I just did this, 5 minutes ago.  Followed your instructions, and it works!
(woohoo!)

Next question: I inadvertently erased a file on c: called evox.ini.  Evox still starts up correctly, but it has the basic "MS Dashboard/Reboot/Power Off/Settings/Backup" list of options.  I copied two files into the SKIN directory, RuDeDuDe_Part2.jpg and skin.ini.

[...]
Okay, just found the original evox.ini from the installer zip file, loaded that, seems to work.  Next step is going to be to figure out how to run things on it.  Any recommendations for ini files for evox?

Ok, heres the dealo, we've tried MechAssultInstaller, and we've tried every 007 AUF we can find, none of the MA would go on the memory card, we are using a usb cable and a xbox controler wired together and can get the save game file on the xbox for 007 AUF but when we go to load game it just goes there and there's no games to load same goes for if you try to load from the mem card any help would be greatly aprreciated.
