Oh for X sake ..

Free-X released a _proof of concept_ exploit that'll only run xbe's signed with the right key.

So?

Well write your own buffer overflow code that _does not_. In fact, do what the Complex Loader does (although for all bios versions) when you overflow, and you have an instant software mod solution.

Stop wasting time exploiting _proof of concept_ code and make something that'll work instead.

(For the ones who don't know much about programming, crypto etc. Just read, and learn. One day you'll also be the ones who write these types of hacks - but not today)

why do not need permission. What is illegal about this. You are just selling a program that works on your xbox. If I write a program that works in windows I don't need to ask MS before I can sell it.

Christ, this is what is to happen because of this exploit.  People have no familiarity with the intent of the security of the Xbox and the legislation behind it.

This...exploit...violates...the...DMCA.  Clear enough?

The exploit was RE'd  in  Germany. The DMCA has no jurastiction in Germany.

DMCA = US law. Although a lot of countries are implementing their own versions of it it's by no means universal, nor will it ever be.

... and a lot of people outside the US don't give a crap about that war-hungry nation steered by an idiot and populated with FAIPs.

So, keep the US-centric views under wrap. If I buy an Xbox, I'm free to do what the f*ck I want with it.

So sell it in Germany.  This doesn't protect it from the DMCA when marketed in Wal-Mart.

Well in what a world do we live?

People will start crying when another CODE RED worm will infect
XBOX Live users and will flood the internet...

You americans are really dumb if you do not stand up against a
law (DMCA) that forbids to find security holes in your property.

This exploit is only local, but I am very sure that XBOX Live is full
of exploits, too.

If the DMCA is able to forbid a Dashboard exploit than it is also
able to forbid IE, IIS etc... exploits.

The land of the free....

Did I saw I like the DMCA?  I am very much opposed to it.  However, I am not employed by Wal-Mart, never mind being high in the chain of command there.  My point is that US stores will not carry such an item, regardless of how ridiculous the DMCA is.

Xeero: Is the Gamecube Freeloader sold in stores in the US?

You know - the bootcd made by reverse engineering Nintendos format and using the actual header from a commercial game to boot?

Point taken?

The Freeloader allows people to play imports, and in no way advocates piracy; reverse engineering and piracy are two entirely separate topics for debtate.  What this guy is talking about is selling a kit in stores to allow people play backups.  Are they going to be located in aisle 5 next to the modchips?

EDIT:  Also, Freeloader is not sold in US stores, to the best of my knowledge.

Xeero: The Freeloader opens up a "hole"* in the Gamecube in a way that resembles opening up booting of Linux on the Xbox. If there's a viable reason for a product besides playing copies it's legal.

* I won't go into details, but NO you cannot play backups on the cube .. the Freeloader does something else.

http://us.codejunkies.com/search.asp?c=US&...=$&r=0&l=1

us = US, product = Freeloader. I didn't search for other hits.

I didn't say you could play backups using Freeloader.  I said you could play imports.  And that is enough to keep it off US storeshelves.  Why the hell do you think they are going to sell a similar product that, albeit on a different console, will let you play backups???

OK I do not want to sell anything I am just trying to play through what will happen.

The product would also have to come with a huge warning like the following.

WARNING
If your XBOX is a version 1.4 or higher (serial number > XXXXXXX) or If you have played a game on your xbox manufactured after XX July 2003 or if you have connected to xbox live after XX July 2003 this program may/will not work on your xbox and you may/can no longer be able to connect to xbox live or play any games released after XX July 2003 on your xbox.
