Hello again...  I was doing some more looking around and at the end of the ernie.xtf file there is the path to the xbe to run.  It would seem possible to change the path from DeviceHarddisk0Partition2 to the path for the DVD player DeviceDVDPlayer (or whatever it is).  That would allow you to run the default.xbe off the DVD.

Just a though....  Well im gonna go break out my tools and get to work on some of this stuff.

Any other ideas/suggestions/comments would be great.

This would most likely fail because you couldn't eject the disk without the xbox resetting. But there might be another way, a tip is "whatever.xbe". I don't have a xbox right now so I can't experiment myself sad.gif

I dont know but think you may be wrong there it should be possible as X-free states the xbox dashboard does not contain the reset on eject feature.

Thanks X-free.

don't have to worry about that if you already have the disc in the drive.

Assuming that changing the file pointer to look on the DVD drive works, I'd see it going something like this:

The disc would try to boot the unsigned default.xbe.  The dashboard would attempt to load to give you the "disc is dirty" error window.  The exploit should take over at this point and try to execute the xbe defined in the hacked font file.

I guess it would make a little more sense in naming your xbe on the disc something other than default.xbe, so that it would simply skip it and move on to the HDD for booting...

Either way, you have to fiddle with the font files on the HDD, so why even bother?

Well I gave it a try and it was somewhat successful....  First thing I found out... you must have a locked HD...  Pain in the ass!!!!

Anyway I changed it to DeviceCdrom0 default.xbe and it work....  Kinda...  All it really did was show a short blip of the program and then an error screen.  I believe this is because of the reason originally mentioned in the exploit description.  I am referring to the patching of the kernel.

So what has to happen is in the first split second that the xbe loads the kernel must be patched so execution can continue....

So now to figure out how to patch it..........    biggrin.gif

You arent patching the actual bios, you are patching the copy of it that is in RAM.

of course you arn't patching the original bios, it's write protected... And if xbl didn't check for the bios in the ram, then you could use xbl with 1st gen modchips.

exactly, this is what i pointed out yesterday. ms of course check the bios in ram as the tsop bios is only used once and that is during the bootup sequence to load it into ram. if ms didn't check the bios in the ram not only could we get on live with 1st gen mods but we could also just switch off our mods after booting.

patching the bios via software is exactly the same as what the enigmah did. so hey you may well be able to play backups without a mod, but not on LIVE (and i applaud that) you want to play backups online then go on xbconnect.
