I have modded 3 v1.6 xboxes over the weekend.  two work perfect, the other one is installed correctly, but won't read any media from the dvd drive.  I swapped out dvd drives and still the same problem.  I then proceeded to swap harddrives from one of the good ones and it plays games from the harddrive (which leads me to believe its definitly modded correctly), but still won't read cd's.  Any help is much appretiated.

does the one xchip actully work, like does it load up and goto the bios screen? cuz ur saying it just wont read the dvd drive..
itsa possibilty that the chip may be defective..

id suggest you return it tho.. cuz from what im hearing other people had the same problem, so they returnd it and they'er new one worked great.

CD's? or DVD's?  As some DVD drives are picky on media used.  CDR's and CDRW are painful to find compatible, but DVD-R's have a better successrate

To verify an X-chip is VERY EASY.

Flash the X-Chip with latest X-Chip bios. Once flashing is complete close the X-control software client. No start it up again and wait till the RED X turns GREEN.

Now simply click on X-Chip then Read Settings. The X-control client will quickly scan the X-chip and report it's setting. Ff it's the SAME display as what you have flashed the chip just before then your X-chip is working fine and is NOT defective.

If your Xbox is fragging it's a CONTACT ISSUE. Either a soldering issue if you soldered the via the pin header/D0 hole or a contact issue via the solder-less adapter or rivets. It could also be the female header of the X-chip with the solder-less adapter. Also verify that the gold wire is making proper contact with the DO hole of the Xbox and the gold wire should be at a slight angle making "good" contact with the outer ring of the D0 hole of the Xbox.

Just to inform the members of this forum there are VERY little issues with the X-chip. Quality control is excelent. In fact out of 50 RMA returns I have personally tested ONLY 1 chip was really defective. All others worked fine. Just reflashed back to Cromwell and it worked fine in a 1.3 Xbox.

If you can WRITE to your X-chip and then READ it's settings then the chip is NOT defective.

Reading CD/DVD has nothing to do with the X-chip. The X-chip houses the Bios and OS to run unsigned games and third party utilities.

I can prove your defect testing wrong by 10 fold.

What if female header row is out out allignment or not enough solder, USB still programs and reads, but LPC port will not work.  Thsu proving PC software cannot prove defective chip or not reliable on a read/write test.

You got a good point there. However quality controle is very high and the manufacture has an electronic system to spot those problems with the female headers not soldered correctly.

Only other way the chip can be bad is the phyical part of the female header itself is bad. (a bad part to begin with)

This is very rare but does happen. There is nothing wrong with the X-chip itself (electronic wise) so with the swap out of the female header with the new part fixes the chip.

The PC system check with the X-control software does work for 99% of the time. It is very rare that you will have a bad female header installed in the X-chip to begin with.

I don't care if manufacturer has dedicted robot, things can screw up....also, no solder algorythms to date are reliabe on any AI, or xray machines. They screw up more then cathc solder issues.

No one can say they have a 99% yeild on production( maybe NASA at 99.99999%) . 3 to 5 % is standard failure rate on any run.

If you say 1 out of 50 was defective that makes 2 out of 100 , which means 98%not 99%.

Thanks for the replies.  The chip is fine.  I upgraded the evox bios to 1.2 and then it would read my cd's using my philips drive, but I have yet to find a media that my toshiba drive can read.

Speaking of evox 1.2 bios,  when I upgraded my chip to that bios I lost my F drive and i can't get it back even using the 1.1 bios and the same disk I made to format it in the first place.  any suggestions?

Spyder133: You need to chnage the LBA48 settings in the Evox settings, states this in the readme/nfo file.  Read the manual that came with the bios to find exact location to change LBA48 to F drive only

As for toshiba drive I have one, or two.  I've had success with Verbatim CD-RW's and HITAC CD-RW's, as for DVD-R's ( Ritec, e3m, maxell, mitsumi, verbatim )  Note: a toshiba will not read any CDR's or at least i have come across.

When I meant the 99% defect FREE rate I was correct. I meant this NOT on the whole chip itself I meant this on just the female header part being properly soldered on the X-chip itself.

As I have stated the defect rate of the X-chip is very very low. The 2 defective chips were from returns that customers stated were all defective to begin with.

So 50 returns marked as "Defective" were ONLY 2 in reality.

This is why I say to do a write a read test. It would be very rare to have a defective female header in the first place to begin with unless the part was bad from the beginning. That's why I stated 99% rate and I can claim that high of a yeild to be "DEFECT FREE" at least when it comes to the female header issues of the X-Chip.

Now if you cannot wite to the X-Chip nor read it's setting and your drivers are installed correctly then something is wrong with your X-Chip and should be returned for an exchange.

Who cares about defect rates!!!!!
My chips work and so do alot of others.

BTW, easybuy2000 your number changed from 1 in 50 to 2 in 50 , which increases defect rate reported by you.  But then again I do not care about defetc rates, as all products have defects ( Even NASA with 99.9999% control )
