Very common issue after softmodding.
If you're using UnleashX as your main dash go to Config.xml (probably on the E:\ drive) in the File Explorer and near the top of the text document it should tell you where and what your MS dash is called.
Usually with a softmod it will be:-
<MSDashboard>C:\xxxxxxx.xbe</MSDashBoard> (xxxxxxxx.xbe standing for any one of at least half-a-dozen different names eg. msdash.xbe)
Now go to the C:\ drive and see what .xbe are there. Chance are you won't find the one above because the softmodding has renamed it to something else. It is most likely to be the first .xbe on the C:\ drive beneath the folders. Click on it and if it is the MS dash reboot to UnleashX and return to the Config.xml and change the xxxxxxxxx.xbe there to exactly the same name. Do not even think about changing the .xbe name, edit the Config.xml, do nothing else.
If the .xbe you click on is not the MS dash the Xbox may freeze, particularly if it is for a Xbox Live Updater. Do not worry just shutdown and reboot again.
If you don't know how to edit the text post and I or somebody will explain further.
You'll also find that the UnleashX Autolaunch CD and probably DVD player are pointing at the wrong MS dash name and may well be named differently too. You'll probably want to alter them although it is usual to point the DVD player at DVDX Application that comes with most softmods rather than use the MS dash.
If the event MS dash shown in the Config.xml and and actual MS dash .xbe are the same names and the MS dash still won't boot something else is going on. But from what you've said I'd be surprised if it doesn't work.
With an Evox dash very much the same thing applies just look at the .ini file and edit that in the same way.
With XBMC if the MS dash can not be launched from the main Menu > Shutdown > Dashboard option go to Settings > Programs > General and enable "Use Custom Dashboard Path" and in "Dashboard" put the correct MS dash .xbe.
