How To Recognize A Softmod?
« on: January 06, 2013, 08:52:00 AM »

My friend picked up a 250gb xbox with XBMC as its dashboard, but he has no idea if its been chipped or softmodded. We can tell its been opened before. Is there anything in the hdd that I can look for that would let me know either way? I don't want to assume anything before I change the dashboard to EvoX.

boot up with hexen dvd "this will by pass a shaddow c if you have one"
then compare the files on C:
with the files on D:\stock files\C

they should be the same if its hard modded.

you can also just go ahead and tell hexen to flash the xbox,
if it detects a chip and a knmown bios it will tell you..

however the easiest way is usually to watch the screen when booting..

if you have a pink sheild on sceen, it says loading ind bios. or says something about xecuter then its usoing one of those bioses.
also some will have a diferent coloured x..

Most (if not all) softmods usually install custom dashboards on the E drive. I would check the E drive and see if there is a folder named "dashboard" or something similar. If you look inside the dashboard folder you should see  XBMC related data, or UnleashX, Evox, etc.

I've done plenty of softmods and chip installs. Chip installs usually require dashboard executables on the root of the C drive and softmod executables generally are in a folder on the E drive. Most modchip bios files usually have a boot sequence to look for certain files first, such as evoxdash.xbe as the highest priority, and then searching for avalaunch.xbe or xboxdash.xbe or other files. Softmods I've used in the past would generally just look for E/dashboard/default.xbe.

Hope this helps

Kinda interesting. But yeah, the D drive doesn't eject. It was said that it 'sometimes didn't,' but we've never seen it eject once.

Anyway, though there's a XBMC setup in the root of C, there's an evox setup on the root of E which seems to boot to another XBMC on the E:\APPS\XBMC\default.xbe.

the evoxdash.log (updated to today's date) reads:

CODE
INFO - Mounting D: to \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1
INFO - launching cutfile: D:\evoxdash.cfg
INFO - openening cutfile: D:\evoxdash.cfg
INFO - Launching xbe: E:\Apps\XBMC\default.xbe

I didn't even know it had been using Evox at all, which is what I wanted as the main dash. At the risk of bricking an xbox that can't read a disk, how can I get it to just stay at Evox without autobooting to XBMC?

i edited a copy of hexen to work from hdd.
should make your life easier..

and try taping the box above the dvd palayer when you press eject to see if it opens. (quite a hard tap, but still a tap)
