Spent 5 Hours Trying To Softmod, Still No Luck. Help?!
« Reply #15 on: November 11, 2009, 02:20:00 AM »

I know there are a lot of different versions of xplorer360 out.
Are you sure you are using a version that is supposed to work?

You wouldn't happen to know someone with a modded xbox? He could transfer the gamesave to the usb stick with it.

Try to find the winhex program. It can open a disk in raw sector format. Open the usb stick with it and see if you can find some data on the stick. I don't know what parameters xplorer 360 checks on a drive to qualify it as a fatx formatted drive. It's not an open source program, so it's hard to tell.
The program won't solve your problem, but it will prove that the xbox formatted the disk and had access to it.

It's logical that the drive doesn't show up under the pc drives after it was fatx formatted, since pc's don't recognise the fatx file system.

I also remember reading somewhere that an usb memory device doesn't work with the 1.6 and 1.6b xbox model. You wouldn't happen to have such a model?

regards.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a lot of people have been having problems with the Cruiser Micro drives containing the U3 software (myself included although my PS2 loves it). IMO, the compatibility list should be edited to EXCLUDE these particular models.

It sounds to me like you've just a bad luck of the draw. I know, It can be very discouraging, but I was in your place once and I didn't give up. I now have one that works and if you can find one, my personal recommendation for best compatibility is the SanDisk Cruiser Micro 256mb with the 3 color "skins". I have owned one since day one with no problems concerning xbox use. Granted, I lost the "skins" to it, but it still works.  laugh.gif

http://www.xbox-linu...esystem_Details has the details, BRFR and FATX at the specified offsets.
And there's always linux if xplorer360 fails. Xebian/xboxhdm2/xboxhdm2.1

I still could not determine the state of that one flash drive you were using. Did it end up being formatted correctly, or not?

It is a very critical question that has not been made clear, and either way confirms it is one of two things:

EITHER

1. The xBox cannot format the drive to FATX (Memory card cannot be used error, WITHOUT "it has been erased")

OR

2. The xBox formatted the drive to FATX, but the computer is not recognizing it (Diagnose problems with software and/or computer)

If you can get it down to either # 1 or # 2, the community will have a far less difficult time answering your question. biggrin.gif

did you try..

copy a gamesave to the thumbdrive from the xbox

unplug the thumbdrive

plug it back in

copy the same gamesave from the thumbdrive to the xbox

if it works it's not the thumbdrive

I am using the latest version of xplorer360. My xbox has a build date of 2002 - 09 - 14.

As far as I know I don't see why they wouldn't be compatible...

Scenario 1 is what is happening with my Xbox. As i've said before, when I insert a clean FAT32 formatted usb drive into the xbox, i get the message, "the memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged".

There is NO mention of the drive being erased.

It is the same message for all 4 of the usb drives i've tried.

When I disconnect the drive from the xbox and plug it into my computer, navigate to the drive within My Computer, Windows says that the drive has not been formatted (even though the drive had been formatted in FAT32 prior to being plugged into the xbox.)

I take it as this must mean that the Xbox is in some way changing the drive's format.

It is logical to me that Windows is not able to access the drive as it SHOULD be in FATX format... But neither xplorer360 nor Action Replay even recognize the drive.

I have tried this. I can copy a file from the Xbox hdd to the thumbdrive...However, when I navigate to the thumbdrive I am presented with no option to copy back to the xbox hdd, only the option to delete exists.

All right, now that clears things up quite a bit for the community. Basically, none of the drives you have tried will work. It is just a problem down to the USB drives. The system tried to format it, but failed. I mean, when I tried USB drives in the MS dashboard just to see what they'd do, even this tiny 128 megabyte one I found failed to format, and prior, even though it was formatted to FAT32 or somethin', refused to show up in the xBox Media Center as well. The xBox is just quite finnicky.

Anyway, we need to start exploring new routes for devices that can be used as usb drives? Do you have a cell phone, music player, or SD enabled camera (with SD card), or even (better yet) an SD card reader?

Any of those items may possibly be used. I mean, even an old ancient IDE hard drive that is really small in conjunction with a power supply and an IDE to usb adapter could be used. In theory, anyway. That is why I made so many suggestions.

Just FYI, if you're using a cell phone, that probably don't work if you have one with a crappy little proprietary crippled non normal os. You'll have far better luck with a fully featured normal universal lovely cell phone os, such as Symbian, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Android, or any other one that I failed to mention - Some may require a special application (windows mobile, for example will need WM5 Storage, or Card export, or something like that. Palm OS I am pretty sure has a freeware application that can work for that purpose too).

Good Luck!

Whew! That was really a long arduous process. I hope you have either a lot of files to save, or your original receipts for those other seven thumbdrives smile.gif  happy.gif .
