Spent 5 Hours Trying To Softmod, Still No Luck. Help?!
« on: November 09, 2009, 08:41:00 AM »

Okay, I have splinter cell.

I have a modded controller soldered with a usb input.

I have a confirmed working usb thumbdrive. (sandisk cruzer micro 4gb)

My problem is, Xbox will not give me the message "The memory card wasn't working properly and has now been erased".

If the thumbdrive is plugged in before i navigate to the memory screen, the xbox recognizes it, I can copy files to it no problem. When I plug the drive into my computer, Action replay and xplorer 360 cannot find the fatx formatted drive.

This leads me to believe that my xbox is not formatting the drive properly... but if that was the case why would i be able to copy files to it?

Please, someone throw me a bone here!

i'll try that...

Okay, i followed all the steps word for word.

When I am updating the usb driver, It says in the walkthrough to select "Don't Search. I will choose the driver the install". Click next. Select "ActionReplay XBOX" and click next.

problem is, ActionReplay XBOX doesn't show up.

When i navigate to "C:\Program Files\Datel\Action Replay XBOX\Drivers", it says "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware".

When i try to drag and drop the files into Action replay it has a little circle with a line through it icon.

Still no go.. this is getting frustrating.

Some things you can try.

When you select the "Dont search, I will select a driver." option in the "add new hardware wizard" there should be a box at the top of the device type window that says "Show Compatible Hardware" or something like that. Once this is unticked, you should see a driver called "redcloud".

-Regards-

EDIT- Nevermind. Forget all that. I recently re-installed windows (xp64) and had not yet tried to access a memory card but when I stumbled on this post I decided to set one up to make sure I had acquainted myself with the entire process.

It's easy. You don't even need action replay drivers at all. Plug in your usb drive. When windows recognizes it, it will tell you it found Cruiser Micro...bla, bla.. and as long as windows tells you "the hardware was installed and ready to use", you can at this point access it with xplorer360.

I tried unchecking the box, but it doesn't make a difference.

Redcloud does not show up in the list.

It still tells me that "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware".

I formatted the usb drive to FAT32, plug it into the xbox, got the message "the memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged". The xbox recognizes the drive and I can copy files to it from my xbox hard drive.

When i plug it back into my computer, xp makes the device inserted sound, when i double click on the drive in my computer it says, "The drisk in Drive F is not formatted, do you want to format it now?"

I suppose this means that the Xbox has formatted the usb stick to FATX?

If the drive is indeed FATX, Xplorer360 and Action Replay should recognize it, right?
Xplorer 360 says "could not find a FATX drive to open!" and Action replay shows a circle with a cross through it when I try to drag and drop a file.

Who knew this would be such an arduous task, it all seems so simple... why can't i get it to work?

I think my overall problem might stem from the fact that I have never got the "The memory card wasn't working properly and has now been erased" message when viewing the usb drive within the memory menue on the xbox. Every walkthrough and instructable mentions this particular phrase, but I have never seen it.

You honestly shouldn't need to format it with xbox you can do that on pc with action replay. You could try manually erasing it on xbox in memory menu. What version of windows are you running btw?

I've manually erased the drive multiple times on the xbox and then plugged it into the computer.

the drive shows up in my computer, but it is not accessible unless i format it.

Action replay and xplorer360 do not recognize the drive.

I am running Windows XP Professional SP3

From my understanding, after reading countless tutorials on "how to softmod your xbox in under 30 minutes", I need the usb drive to be in FATX format in order for Action Replay or Xplorer360 to recognize the drive.

I've been searching for a way to convert the drive to FATX on my computer, to no avail...

Im sorry we haven't been able to solve this yet. Did you add the DATELINFO.XBX into the apporiate directories of the game saves before trying to drag and drop into action replay?

Your usb stick probably isn't compatible with the xbox.
Letting the M$dash format it is the way things should work.
Using xplorer360 on your pc should work to access the fatx formatted stick.

Have you tried already to save a gamesave on the stick. That would prove that the stick is or isn't working.

Try another USB memory device. You should find some small capacity ones very cheap nowadays.

Another issue is the U3 software that sometimes is installed on an usb memory stick.
You should get the U3 removal tool and remove that crap.

Make sure that the stick works on the xbox as expected.
Only start making it work at your pc afterwards.

I don't think the inner chip of sandisk sticks are always the same.
So, even if a Sandisk Cruzer is on the list of compatible sticks doesn't mean that your stick will be compatible as well.

regards.

I can copy files from the xbox hd to my usb drive.

The xbox is recognizing the drive, it is xplorer360 that does not see it when i search for it...

I have formatted the drive to FAT32 before plugging it into the xbox, so it should be clean. I used the U3 removal tool just to be extra sure.

I guess I will buy a new memory stick, which do you guys suggest?

I've used the Kingston Datatraveler 1GB USB stick with no problems with WinXP SP2 & Xbox 1.6.

The tutorial that worked for me was:

The format before you plug it into the xBox does not matter too much (I think). If you plug it in, and it says that it "was not working correctly, it has been erased" means that the xBox succeeded in formatting it to FATX. If it gives you some other error that does not say "has been erased" (which really means formatted) then it is not compatible.

First let's establish that it has been formatted to FAT X. It sounds like you've messed around with that quite a bit, so find out where you're at on that. See that it has been plugged into the xBox yielding a "erased" message, as in the paragraph above. Next, try doing what "xboxmods 2977" said in this post and just letting it search automatically, and then we'll go from there.

Just FYI, xBox will NOT accept MemoryStick of any kind without a USB to MemoryStick adapter as well as a USB to xBox controller plug adapter.

well, I just got back from bestbuy, I bought another usb thumbdrive that is on the compatible list, sandisk cruzer micro 2gb.

I plugged the new drive into my computer.
I ran the U3 removal software and formatted it.
Pluged it into the Xbox and i'm getting the same message as before. It mentions nothing about the drive being erased, but when I browse it in the memory menu, it is blank. I can copy files to it as before. Moving the drive from the Xbox to the computer, Windows still does not recognize the drive and asks me to format it in order to access it (must mean that the xbox formatted the drive, right?) Xplorer 360 still does not find a FATX drive... Its doing exactly the same thing as it was with the previous thumbdrive.

I am connecting the USB drive through a controller I modded. I depinned the second memory card reader and soldered a female usb end to it. as per: http://www.instructables.com/id/Original-X...-Slot-USB-Conv/

is there a better way to connect the usb to the xbox? i figured this seemed the best, the solder joints looked fine before i closed the controller, but i think i might mod my other controller too, to be extra sure...

I knew i shouldn't have doubted my solder joints, but i opened up my other controller and did the same usb mod. I AM STILL GETTING THE SAME RESULTS...
