Eeprom.bin File Is Missing
« on: July 21, 2009, 12:09:00 PM »

I was able to successfully softmod my xbox using Splinter Cell xploit, or at least thats what I thought.  I can launch XBMC through the newly installed dashboard fine.  Currently, Im using the original hard drive with the Xbox but figured I would make use of a 500 GB WD Blue hard drive that I have in order to make my XBOX a more useable media centre.  By the way, I have read some forums here and they mention this drive is lockable and will work.

I read a few articles online and tutorials and they mention that I need to backup my eeprom.bin file but when I go to locate this file using FTP, its not located in the E:\backup\MS location.  I have done a search everywhere on the C: and E: drives and cannot locate this file.  I did the MS backup and MOD backup prior to installing the SoftMod and UnleashX.  I have gone back and restored my C: drive and tried to follow the tutorial again and unfortunately end up with the same results.  I've tried to installed EvoX in order to use the backup feature as suggested on another tuturial and still end up with the same results.

Im not sure if my xbox ever came with this file in question as I purchased it off a Craigslist ad or if the file in question, is simply created by the backup utility.  Regardless, Im definitely missing this file.

Anyhow, Im basically wondering if there is a way to make sure my current C: drive has all its file intact or if it was missing something from the get-go; which is resulting in me not having this file.   Can I simply request someone to send me their eeprom.bin file, or is this file associated to an individual Xbox only and not a generic file?!?!?

Ideally, I would love to use the softmod + 500 GB drive as my media centre and have it all working ASAP.  So, if there is anyone on here that can provide any insight to my issue or suggest anything, I would greatly appreciate your advice.  I do have a copy of Slayers Evox and AID with me if that helps.  I just havent ever used either application but read it might be useful to have so I did manage to get my hands on them.

Pls note, Im a newbie to this and I may not understand the full jargon or terminology so I may ask some questions that appear to be stupid here but am trying to catch myself up on this as its been ages since I have done anything like this.

I do thank you in advance for any help.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

The eeprom is unique to your Xbox. Use Config Magic or Evox to take a backup of your eeprom.

While you're sorting things out, upgrade to a better softmod - if you'd used Krayzie 1.1.1 it would have forced you to make a backup of your eeprom, and given you the tools to do it. smile.gif

thnx for the reply and for providing me a confirmation of the eeprom being unique to each xbox.

I will download and install Krayzie 1.1.1 and test this out.  But before I do this, is there a way for me to reconfirm or reset my xbox hard drive back to its original retail state!?!!?  This way I know its back to its original state to avoid the issue Im currently faced with.

So, after trying to update my softmod I basically fuxored my box and got error 16.  After numerous attempts of trying different things I was able to find an article that helped fix this error.  I followed the tutorial and took apart my xbox and noticed underneath the warranty sticker was voided out well before and quite possibly the previous owner of the xbox deleted and never replaced the eeprom.bin file.

Anyhow, after I followed the tutorial I finally have a working xbox.

My question is: am I able to still upgrade to a 500 GB IDE drive without an eeprom.bin file as my xbox doesnt have one by the looks of things.

The previous owner didn't "delete and never replace" eeprom.bin, it was never there in the first place. A stock Xbox doesn't need it, and it's perfectly possible to softmod your Xbox without ever taking a copy - but it isn't recommended.

You should take a backup of eprom.bin (and for clarity, backup means that you copy it to your PC, not just leave it on the Xbox!), but also look at other ways of upgrading the disk, like lxhdm or chimp, that don't need a copy of eeprom.bin. This post gives an excellent summary of the available methods, with links. Also, remember to use XBPartitioner 1.1 to format F or G if they are larger than 256GB, otherwise you'll get data corruption as the disc fills up.

I was able to backup my eeprom.bin by using your boot diskette, it worked like a charm!

I was also able to install my 500 GB drive on to my xboxand am in the middle of doing a softmod to this new drive but noticed the entire 500 GB drive isnt being allocated.

Is there something Im missing or is there a way to enable the entire drive as opposed to what I have now?

Thnx again for all of your help, Heimdall
