Action Replay, Usb Drive, And Me--doesn't Work
« on: April 29, 2009, 09:51:00 PM »

Hi all,

Trying to softmod my Xbox using the Ndure softmod method w/Splinter Cell...and I'm having problems.  Maybe the best way to start is to describe what I've done so far:

1.  Went to the Memory screen on my Xbox with up-to-date dashboard, put my mimobot Star Wars USB flash drive into the Xbox via a USB to Xbox cable, got the "memory erased" message (good), brought it downstairs to my Mac Pro running Windows XP in Boot Camp.

2. Downloaded Krayzie's Ndure package and installed Action Replay.

3.  Did the USBview thing, got the prod/vendor ID, etc, updated the AR (1.05) driver.inf file with that info.

4.  Went to Control Panel, updated the driver manually to "Action Replay Xbox".

5.  When I put the USB drive into the computer and start Action Replay, the big Action Replay "AR" logo flashes on/off green; on the far left column, I see "Memcard"; and under that, a ton of identical folders appear, each named "memblock 10000" or something like that (I forget now, and I'm not at the computer).  And, AR freezes; I can't drag anything to it, can't exit it, can't do anything with it except watch the "AR" logo flash on and off.  Nooo!

If I put the USB drive back into the Xbox, it recognizes it as a valid drive, which is why I'm confused--I thought the problem was that the mimobot drive might be incompatible.  But if that were the case, wouldn't the Xbox not recognize it properly?

Anyway, fishing for help here if someone wants to bite.  As far as I know I've followed the various softmod guides to the letter, but I'm stumped!

I should add that I'm trying to do all this to get XBMC installed.

Maybe you could try the xbplorer 360 program instead of the action replay package.
It can read and write files of fatx partitions. Due to it's name, you might think it's only for xbox 360, but it also works well with xbox drives and memory devices.
Create a normal gamesave on your memory stick with your xbox.
Doing so, you will know in which folder you need to install the Krazy exploit.

Make sure you transfer the exploit to the xbox harddisk before you use it.
It can't run directly from the usb stick.

regards.

Thanks very much!  That sounds like a good bet.  I downloaded the xplorer360.

One question (pardon my ignorance--I'm 37 and have only used Xbox games once in a blue moon).....how do you get the game save onto the USB drive?  I went into Splinter Cell, got to a checkpoint, and saved the game....I think it went to the Xbox hard drive.  If I go to "Memory" from the Xbox main menu, I can see my USB drive there under "Controller 3", but it's blank.  I don't see how to copy the game save from the hard drive to the USB stick; I also don't see how to save the game directly to the USB drive from within the game.  Can you just give me a shove in the direction of either of those?  I'm sure I can figure out the rest wink.gif

I should add that when I go to the Xbox hard drive and go to the game saves area, if I select a game that lists a save, all I see is an option to "Delete"; there's no "Copy" function that I would've expected.

Move down to the entry for the game, then right onto the actual gamesave, then press A.

lol....duh!  that was pretty stupid of me.

OK, I tried that, and when it tried to copy over the gamesave to the USB drive it said "The copy failed."  Does that mean I'm SOL?

It's strange, because when I try my Sandisk USB camera card reader with Sandisk 512MB SD card, it doesn't give me any option to format or erase; it just says "this memory unit may be damaged", and the card isn't recognized.  The mimobot USB drive I was using WAS recognized, and the Xbox DID allow it to be erased and formatted properly....so I'm not sure why the copy would fail anyway?  Weird...?

No, we've all been there. smile.gif

I think the copy failing simply means that the Xbox doesn't like that USB stick. I've got one exactly the same - appears to format, but you can't copy a save to it. It's trial and error until you find a USB stick that works.

Thanks for not making me feel small wink.gif

OK, fair enough--I'll have to dig around and see if I can find a USB something that works.  Cheers for your help, much appreciated!
