Successful Exploit And Evox Install - Can't Read Burned Disks...
« on: September 08, 2007, 03:52:00 PM »

Hey guys.  I've softmodded one Xbox using the Splintercell exploit/ EvoX dashboard with no problems.  Installed xbox media center too, and love it.  dl, burn, and play games all the time. no problems.

I just bought another used Xbox today with the intention of softmodding it for my gf.  The guy had never really played it much and the MS Dash was an old one, so I ran an xbox live update to get it to 5960.  After that, I did the Splintercell exploit with no apparent problems.  Backed up the MS Dash, backed up the original mod, then installed the softmod and EvoX just like i did before.  everything seemed to go fine.

I restarted, and it booted into EvoX as expected.  Except...it won't recognize any burned DVD media.  Burned games that are working fine on my other softmoded Xbox won't run in this new one.  Original games play fine, and I don't get any errors anywhere, but I get an "Unknown" label when I put a burned disc in.  I've tried loading games from EvoX and from the softmod installer app (it comes up if i boot with the tray open) with no success.

I even restored the MS Dash (successfully), redid the exploit, and everything went smoothly again, only to get the same "unknown" message with burned DVDs.

Any idea what's going on?  Could there be a problem with the optical drive?  Could I have messed something up when I ran that Xbox Live update to get the Dash up to 5960 (I didn't have to do that with my other modded Xbox)?  I also noticed that, even after setting up the network properties, I can't FTP into the new box.

Again, other than the error of "unknown" when i put a burned disc in, this "modded" xbox seems totally normal.  These games work fine in my other xbox modded the exact same way.

any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Are you using DVD +r's? If so try burning a DVD -r as some xbox's will not recoqnize the +'s.

oh wow...that was it.  two of the first games i'd gotten when i first modded my own xbox were on DVD-R's.  I've since run out and have been using DVD+R's for new games, which work fine on my Xbox.  I tried the old DVD-R games in this new box and they work, as well as some emulators that i had burned on DVD-R.

Is this is a systematic thing?  Like...old-version xboxs won't read DVD+R's?  Does this have to do with the optical drive?  I know there's something about Samsung vs another brand?

Still can't FTP in...but the big problem is solved.  better head out to Best Buy for some DVD-R's smile.gif

thanks!  any additional info would be great...

Glad it worked.
Yeah, Samsung xbox dvd drives will not read +r's. As far as I know (Someone can feel to correct me) it's the only xbox drive that will not. That the main reason I always stick with -r's. Hope you figure out your ftp problem.

thanks again for the info.  yeah i figured out the FTP thing - one of the input jacks on my router seems to be bad, and I had the xbox plugged into that one.  if i use the other ones, it works fine.

DVD-R's it is!

I seem to be having a similar problem my first xbox died so replaced did same soft mod and installed xbmc but none of the burned or pal games work that worked before... and drive doesn't seem to read dvd-r's bc I tried a burned movie which works fine in dvd player but xbox just says busy.. So is there some drives that only read DVD+r's or is something messed up?
