Trying To Sort Some Things Out...
« on: August 18, 2007, 10:12:00 AM »

As many of you know from some of my recent threads, I'm going to be soft-modding my Xbox soon. However, I'm leaving no stone unturned in the quest to make sure I have all the latest information so I don't make a mistake that I'll regret.

However, in reading through the tutorials and posts, I'm a little confused about  a few things.

1) I'm told that the easiest and most effect method of Soft-Modding is using Krayzie Ndure Installer v1.1.1. However, I read that UXE is possibly a better method. This is where I get confused.

2) I've not found any tutorials (or perhaps I've over looked them) that gives a step-by-step walk through of how to soft-mod with the most UP-TO-DATE method. All tutorials I've found are 2-3 years old and don't seem up to date with newer installers that have been released.

Any info would be much appreciated. Or, if I could be pointed in the right direction, I'd do additional research on my own. I've already looking through this thread.

Thanks!

1. Krayzies Ndure is newer than his UXE based softmod. Ndure only adds a few minor things and mostly just for Live, so if your not using Live you'd be fine to use UXE. But either way I'd just use Ndure IMO.

2. Softmodding has just gotten much easier over time and many of the manual things have been cut out, so less need for tutorials.

If you want you could follow this tutorial http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=249145

But just replace "Ltools" with "Krazyies" (whatever version of Krayzies you use UXE or Ndure). But once you get to step "5" you can ditch that tutorial and just follow the onscreen instructions for the rest. And as long as you follow the onscreen instructions you'll be fine.

They should be
1st backup eeprom
then actually back it up in the black menu
then hit back to main menu
basic install
I'd use UnleashX
and the rest is pretty much hitting "A" for "OK"

Also you will need to be sure you have the 5960 M$ dash before you can begin the installation. You can find that by going into the "about" tab in the "settings" menu, then at the very bottom you will have a K:XXXX and a D:XXXX (it's actually like xx.xxxx.xx I think, but the 4 digits in the middle are all that matters). As long as your dash is 5960 you can proceed, if not you'll need to update by putting a Live enabled game in the box (you don't need to connect to Live to get the update, it's on the disc).

Also in Krayzies package there is a readme that helps.

With all that info you should be fine to proceed. If you have any other questions or run into trouble, just ask.

EDIT: Lol, I probably ought to write a full new one sometime since I have all the tools and all 3 games as well as a capture card.  unsure.gif

UPDATE:

With some research I was able to dig up the previous method I used to soft-mod an Box I had about a year ago. I used SID 4.0 and a tutorial found here (which actually has been reposted from the original source I used, Se7enSins.com).

The reason I found this method so easy was because the SID 4.0 contained everything I needed. You copy the Installer file to your Memory Card, you copy the Splinter Cell NTSC file to your memory card, copy both to your Xbox HD and then your off and running.

Where I'm getting confused is all the files and folders included in the Ndure Installer. I see the Splinter Cell save file is is broken up into two parts and I don't see a launcher file. Plus, both parts of the zip are named udata and I can't imagine the card would allow to .zip files with the same name to be copied without asking me to overwrite one or the other.

I'm sure It's really simple, I'm just missing how to set up the files on the memory card before I actually install the soft-mod.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

So your saying I copy udata.zip  from SC save1 to my memory card and then copy udata.zip from SC save2 to my memory card and it won't ask me to overwrite anything?

The reason I ask is because I know the contents of each .zip file are different (one contains folder 5553000ca and the other contains 21585554) but both .zip files themselves are exactly the same file name (IE: udata.zip).

Thanks!

uhm no. what I meant was first copy udata.zip 1 to the mem card. then copy it to your xbox hd. then delete it. then copy udate.zit 2 to the mem card and then copy it to the xbox hd.

Thanks for the help. It's just seems a little confusing as none of this is covered in any of your "Read Me" files about how to use the two parts of the Splinter Cell exploit. It treats it as if it's just one simple file.

What does each udata.zip do? Is one the launcher and one the exploit? Are they both needed in the installation of the soft-mod. If so, why does the "Read Me" file make no mention of the above method you listed?

Thanks for your patience and help.

UPDATE:

Actually, I found a tutorial on Se7enSins.com covering this exact method and it says that I shouldn't have any issues copying both parts of the udata.zip over, even though they are the same file name.

Soft-mod with SC and Ndure

Looks like I may have answered my own question. I have a new memory card on it's way (I ordered one after hearing that the AR cards can corrupt files). In the mean time, I might just do some tests myself on my AR card while I'm waiting to see if there are any issues.

I'll keep you posted.

Yes. Splinter Cell is the only 1 of the 3 that requires 2 saves. Krayzie could possibly better explain why the other 2 games don't require 2 saves (I know it's due to size limitations, but not sure exactly what is different).

Action Replay may corrupt the save, but it's not something you need to be overly worried about. If the save is corrupted it just won't load the exploit, it's not going to kill your xbox or harm it in any way. Plenty of people have had this happen with an AR, but I've executed several hundred saves and never once ran into corruption. But if it does corrupt on you you can try a few things.

1. Reload the save.
2. Try using a smaller size save, then once it's executed and running you can FTP in and delete that save and then put Krayzies Ndure v1.1.1 save on.
3. Then if all else fails resort to an official M$ memcard (or could even try a USB device).

Thanks for the info there ceralkillajme. I actually found a factory sealed, official Xbox memory card on eBay I ordered. Just figured I'd be on the safe side. Plus I use memory cards a lot anyway.

As for the AR and SC saves...You can in-fact upload both .zip files to the card at the same time without any overwrite issues as the AR reads the contents, not the .zip file names. I guess I would have been a little less confused if one folder was labeled Launcher and the other Save but hey, it's still a great installer.

On a side note, what is the general consensus on the forums here about the SID 4.0 installer?

I personaly dislike most/all SID based installers since the older ones are teribly scripted makin it very easy to mess up your xbox also using all kinds of outdated and less safe crap and the newer ones are just partially copied from my installer offering less features and still have the same kind of messy setup. I more believe in an installer that doesn't need a guide to install but just load the save and follow the directions.

Also the SC exploit consists of two saves and also two different region versions unlike the other two games. I don't know exactly why this is sp you would have to ask the hackers/founders themselves

I haven't mentioned anything about how to load the saves to your xbox because for one there are various ways to acomplish this and for two there are allready countless other thread/tutorials covering this situation. All the gamesave exploits can be treated the same. My installer itself as a unique package has nothing to do with the splinter cell exploit or any other gamesave exploit but is just the program that is loaded because of it.

Thanks for the update krayzie. I think I got the hang of things now. I can almost hear XBMC calling my name...
