Xboxhdm Help - Computer Won't Boot From Cd
« on: July 28, 2007, 01:41:00 PM »

I used XboxHDM to create a Linux.iso file and burned this file to both a CD and DVD.  Neither one of these discs will boot when I restart my computer.  I have the new hard dive as primary master and I have one CD drive.  I set my computer to boot from CD and it won't do it.  It tells me to insert bootable media and press any key even though the CD is already in the drive.  Has anyone experienced this problem?  The CD does not just have the .iso file stored on it, it has the contents of the .iso file on it.

Actually my computer will boot from the CD but not when I have the hard drive hooked up for some reason.  I only have one IDE cable because my computer uses SATA hard drives so the hard drive and CD drive are connected to the one IDE cable, does this make a difference?  Is there a certain way I should have them connected?

Hi,

A Ide (or pata) controller only supports 2 devices. When 2 devices are connected to the same controller, one must be set as master controller and the other as slave controller. There is usually a third setting (cable select) in which case the device tries to find out itself if it is a master or slave device based upon it's position on the cable (I believe).

In your case, you could try to set the harddisk as master and the cdrom as slave device. Most people have trouble to lock a harddisk with this setup. Maybe your pc motherboard bios doesn't support to boot from the Ide slave device.

Some workarounds you could try are:

-Lock the harddisk with the dos tools running from a bootable floppy or USB device.
-Boot the Xboxhdm linux from a bootable USB device.

I know there is a topic in this Forum about the second issue.

regards.
