Dashboards have evolved since the first xbox, but xbox-live enabled games typically detect older versioned dashboards and updatethem..  A few versions have special signifigances in older mods..  If any current exploit requires stock dash files to install, then that will be v5960 (unless something changed while I was absent) ..  Thats been the newest dash for a while now for a while, so you can pop in any newer Live  game to get that dash..  You may need to have a network cable the box to update..
You can see the Dash and Kernel versions at the bottom of Settings > System Info in MsDash..
