Yes, the HDD must be locked for the Xbox to boot it. First order of business would be to back up your EEPROM, C drive, and E drive by FTPing to your PC. Second order of business would be to use that information to build an XBOXHDM image...which you can then use to build and lock the new HDD.

Upon me doing the same thing I am doing the option to lockhd -a.
and it gives me that the hdd is frozen state. is there a fix for that, or what am I doing wrong.
 Sorry I thought I would get my 2 cents in and try to help each other out here.

You have an annoying BIOS...it's a common problem, especially with prebuilt computers (one of my home PC's is the same way). The fix is to stop the BIOS from detecting the HDD, since it likes to freeze the security state. There are 2 ways to go about this. One is to disable autodetection of the primary master in the BIOS (setting it to either user or disabled). The second is to boot with the HDD powered, up but no IDE cable, then hotplugging the IDE cable once the xboxhdm bootloader menu comes up (this is what I had to do in my situation, also you'll probably need the HDD jumpered to master instead of cable select for this to work). I'd recommend trying to do it from the BIOS first, and doing the hotplug trick as a last resort.
