Your hd needs to be locked to the Xbox for a softmod to work. If it isn't, you can use xboxhdm or configmagic to lock it using your pc, as long as you have the HD key or the eeprom.bin file.
Obviously you would look for the tutorials for those 2 programs to learn how to use them, You can also use those programs to install the softmod. Directions for setting that up should be in the tutorials you find.

If the drive is locked, you can just use your FTP connection to install the softmod files.

Once it's installed, and drive is locked. You should be able to reboot your xbox without the chip and be done. (I'd make sure the softmod worked properly before physically removing the chip, however.)

dont know what happened there but anyhow to reply to the quote above

i have an xecuter 2.6 installed one bios bank is frag the other is flashed bad
by bad flash it works fine but i get no video i know its the flash because i got a stock hdd with softmod on it and it works great (with chip turned off)
so any how with the chip i can ftp to the box so i copied the files off of the softmod drive and ftp'ed them to the 80 gig drive but since its not locked it wont boot
so is there a way for me to lock it with the softmod on the xbox
is a hotswap possible

i think the softmod might be bert and ernie

i'v seen alot of topics about upgrading hd's seen alot of responses i'v done it myself it's not hard at all with xbhdm or whatever it's called anyways i'v always had a dought though... if you add a bigger hd isn't that more heat inside the xbox? will it overheat or won't it if so how do you prevent this or what should be done?

oh an another quiestion whats the largest you can go on a softmod enabling f and g is it?

the EvolutionX dahboard has a feature to back up your eeprom, you'll probably have to install your old HD so you can see your way through the menus. Then you can use one of the PC utilities to lock the 80gb drive.

You can use EvolutionX to lock the HD, but it's a risky thing to do without being able to see the menus.
If you wanted to try it, make locking the hd the only selectable option by commenting the other options out in the ini. Then you can make it the dashboard your modchip boots into, start the xbox, then use it to lock your hd. Then ftp another dashboard back and see if your softmod works.

You just need the eeprom.bin because it contains the hd key, and the new drive should be locked with the same key as the old drive.
I haven't had to lock a new HD myself, so you should read up on drive locking tutorials and not just take my word for i, thought.
