Problem solved.
Used the hotswap technique to copy xboxrom.bin (which evidently I deleted) from a pbl archive from #xbins.
fyi - i'm using windows xp and found xplorer360 (google it) did the job ('reading' fatx file system) nicely
Since I had some problems doing the hot swap (yes, I read the tutorials), I will write my own step by step method:
Software required:
windows (xp?) os
xplorer360
any files needed to fix/mod xbox (in my case, i needed pbl archive with xboxrom.bin)
Hardware required:
Torx 20 & Torx 10 screwdrivers for opening xbox
alligator clips (I just used a set of jumper cables, anything to electrically connect comp and xbox)
Howto:
1. Extract/Install Xplorer360
2. Shutdown computer
3. Open xbox (6 large torx screws - 4 under foam feet, 2 under stickers)
4. Unscrew small screw holding xbox hdd case
5a. Move power wires in order to take out hdd case, If you need help opening:
5b.
http://www.xbox-scen...icles/open1.php6. Place xbox near computer
7. Remove IDE cable from CD/DVD-ROM devices, leave IDE cable to computer hdd(s)
8. Make sure the IDE cable reaches the xbox hdd (the master IDE connector, not the slave)
9. Electrically connect xbox to computer
10. Power up computer, and press pause-break key before computer detects hdd(s)
11. Power up xbox, and just after MS logo appears under the X, quickly (don't worry too much, I swear it took me nearly an entire minute and it still worked) remove IDE cable from xbox hdd and plug the computer IDE cable into the xbox hdd
12. Press any key to continue booting computer (I actually had to press the TAB key to show system messages, because it would not boot otherwise)
13. Once Windows loads completely, run Xplorer360 (I did not have to, but you might need to right-click 'My Computer', go to Properties, and go to the Device Manager to scan for hardware changes)
14. Go to Drive>Open>Harddrive or Memcard..., this should load the xbox hdd
15. Use the Insert File..., Insert Folder..., Add New Folder, & Extract... options under the Edit menu to access the hdd partitions 0-4 (I believe 3 is C and 4 is E). voila.
16. Once you're done, go to Drive>Close, then exit Xplorer360
17. Unplug computer IDE cable from xbox hdd, plug xbox IDE cable back into xbox hdd, power off xbox
18. Power on xbox to see if it worked.
