I Screwed Up Using Ndure Softmod -- Please Help
« on: May 11, 2006, 09:52:00 AM »

I got an Xbox yesterday with 5101 kernel and 5960 dash. I followed the instructions for
Ndure softmod and I got to the point when I selected "Install Ndure softmod", then selected nkpatcher.06,
"Evolution X dashbord" After selecting this I got:
FAILURE Batch process failed
The last item was: .
Action: rename

After that I did some research on the web, and tried to copy Linux Run save again to the HD.
I tried both versions of nkpatcher, as well as Evox dsh snd Unleash X dash.
I did niot back up anything prior to all that.
At some point I went to Restore from rescue disc -> selected generic kernel.
I was hoping I could still back out from this but I got the message REBOOT, Press A to turn off, then turn it back on using eject, and put on your rescue disc.

I did not have the disc, so I rebooted and put the original MechAssault. I got the 21 screen.

I rebooted again without putting anydisc -- I got to Install Ndure softmod again.

I burn an ISO with with the files from the recue folder that came with Krayzie Ndure Pack (used Qwix).
Now, when I reboot and insert the ISO with resue files, I get the menu selection:
-restore C drive
-restor e drive
-restore system
-restore dashboard
-dashbord setting

Is it safe to performe any of these?
I did not backup anything prior to that. Later I ftp'ed all files from xbox to my PC.
I assumed that Ndure would do an automatic backup, but the only backup i see on E: is
\backups\eeprom

Please, please help, my 8 year old got so excited last night, I told him he would play after I do the mod, and now I'm screwd uo, called in sick, stayed at home and trying to figure out something.
Anybody in Kansas City area?
I'm more then willing to ppay for your expertise.

Thanks,

Radek

Ok, at least you still have FTP access, correct?  Do you have the stock xbox files backed up onto your PC somewhere, or do you have Slayers install disc?  If you have either, then use your Mechassault to gain FTP access and return the xbox to stock.  You can then redo the softmod from the start.  The first time you ran the installer did you select "Backup Eeprom" first, if you didn't that is likely why you got the batch rename error.

Unless you put stock C and E files in the folders before burning the disc then it will not install anything. You could grab Slayers and extract the ISO and look in system/All/ and then grab the "C and E" folders out and put them in the rescue disc, then burn again. Not sure if you will reboot to the M$ dash or to the Ndure softmod after doing this though.

Yes, I still have FTP access.
I did not back up any files prior to the install attempt, only after so I don't think what I got
are stock files.
I don't have Slayer install disc, I started to download Xbox Slayer'S Evox Auto-Installer v2.5Final.iso.
Will it do?
When I put in  Mechassault  I get 21 error.
Yes, I did backup eeprom  (on E: and I copied it to the PC).

I think you need Slayers 2.6 to have the right dashboard files.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try slayer. Should I put Krazies' rescue files
(bios.bin, boot.cfg, config.xml, default.xbe, ux.xbe) along with C and E?

I wouldn't worry about the rescue disc at this point as you don't have all the files that you need to be rescued  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)  Also, when you FTP into your c: drive, what files/folders do you see, and is there a "Dashboard" folder in your e: drive?

Hmmmm... something went wrong obviously and you are missing a bunch of stuff.  What is in the backups folder on the e: drive, just the eeprom?  You are going to need Slayers 2.6.  Once you have that follow the directions as above by cerealkillajme.  Via FTP delete the contents of you c: drive and replace them with the c: drive contents from Slayers.  Also FTP over a fresh copy of Krayzies Installer into the e:\UDATA folder.  Reboot your xbox and Mechassault and run through the installer again.  Make sure you use the backup eeprom option first.

OK, I had to go to work and fix other people's problems.
Thanks for all your feedback yesterday, kevbird, cerealkillajme .
Special thx to BIgSteel, who was PM'ing the tip all day long yesterday.

Last night I bought another xbox, FTP'ed C drive from new one to the PC, and then on to this one.
After I rebooted I finally got M$ dash.
It seems to be "almost" working:
All but one options of the initial main menu e.g. Memory, Music work.
One that does not work is  Live.
When I drill down to Setting everything i.e. udio, Video, etc. works,
except for Network settings.
When I go to Live in main menu, or network in Settings menu i get this 21 error screen,
and all I can do is to reboot.
At this point I was able to install ndure mod with no problem at all.
Also, I can boot from Slayers now -- before I couldn't (haven't started anything with it yet, though).
This box is probably 1.4 - 1.5, the new one that I copied C from is 1.6.
What are the minimal and safest steps to restore M$ dash?

It sounds like you have everything installed correctly. I think the reason your getting error 21 is you must have still had some parts if not all of Ndure on that drive. Ndure prevents you from signing into Live while the softmod is on, that is probably why you got error 21. If you wish to setup a live account you have 2 options.

1. Remove softmod via booting the original disc and selecting to "remove softmod" and "restore from HD backup".

2. Install Krayzies Extras to your E:\Apps folder and then run it from an applications tab in your dashboard. Once in the Extras setup a dual boot and set eject to the "live safe dash" (or something like that) and then you will be able to press eject to boot and you can setup your network. If you lost your GT and don't have it on a Mem Card then you can do an account recovery where you enter all your info (CC, address, etc). Not positive if you can do an account recovery from the "live dash", I think it only has options to setup the network.

I'd try the 2nd option and if you can't recover your GT then use option 1 and then install the softmod again.

Well, one thing you could do is boot your Slayers 2.6, find the option to format just the C: and e: drive (2 separate formats), then find the option to reinstall the M$ 5960 dash to the c: drive.  Do all that without rebooting.  Now reboot, this will take you to a completly stock state.  Reboot to the M$ dash, transfer over Krayzies games save and redo the softmod.  That should work for sure, but someone may have a way to fix just the network issue.

Is not that I care too much about being able to go live, I don't even have the account yet.
I would just like to restore the box to the stock -- especially being able to get to the network settings, in case I need to change it to wireless
Thanks
