Cannot Lock My Seagate St3120022a Hard Drive
« on: March 31, 2006, 03:32:00 PM »

Hello there. After reading that it is now possible to upgrade the hard drive on a softmodded Xbox, I took the plunge and ordered a Seagate ST3120022A 120Gb hard drive as the Xbox Hard Drive Compatibility Chart website said it was one of the most compatible (all but 1 user has managed to lock this drive).

I am trying to use the locking tools as part of XBHDM, but I get the 'this drive does not support the ATA security spec' error message when trying to do it. However, other users seem to be able to lock this drive (in fact that site shows users who are using XBHDM who have locked the drive).

Any ideas why I'm having trouble? Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, on xboxhdm, which locking utility are you using? I believe theres 2.

Id also suggest trying to lock it with a different program.

I have no idea why you get that error message, but i myself have gotten that message and i didnt bother to keep trying. But yea, i checked that xbox compatiblity chart, and all but one deffinetly got theirs to lock. So basically, i have no idea. Just keep experimenting and if you figure out the problem, please tell. Im curious to know.

But yea, someone help this person out

Well i dont know if this will fix your problem. But it helped me. Go into your pc bios and disable auto detect for the primary master. or set primary master to none. Depends on wht type of bios you have.

My problem was frozen hd. But this mite help you if you havent tried it allready. It cant hurt to try. Goodluck

Make sure that it's the ONLY hard drive plugged in just so you don't mess up or accidentally choose another drive. Also, don't put it on cable select. Set the jumper to primary master.

Disabling auto-detection will only remedy a frozen drive error.

And thats why i told him it mite help by disabling auto. Im just throwing ideals out at him. Its not like it would set his pc on fire if he tried it. lol.

Thanks for your suggestions so far guys.

You are right to say that XBHDM has two locking utilities - one on the CD rom and one which is on the DOS floppy you create - neither of which want to know.

I have also tried disabling auto detect on the primary master to no avail. However, hdlock (the CD one) said that the drive wasn't frozen anyway, but I was running out of ideas so I gave it a shot! No luck.

The drive is definately installed on my primary master. Although my hard drive are both SATA, I unplugged them anyway, leaving my Seagate hard drive on the primary master and my DVD-ROM drive as primary slave. Also, it's definately on the primary master as I was able to create the partitions and copy the files over without any problem. Using the semi-graphical interface on XBHDM proves that these have been created OK.

Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem with a drive that everyone else can get to work? I don't know what's going wrong!

P.S. I apreciate the help so far - thanks guys!

I think I might take it to work and try it out there. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a hard-modded Xbox so can't try the apparently-great ConfigMagic!

Fingers crossed!

Just an update - I have just tried to lock my hard drive on one of the computers at work using the lockhd tool on the XBHDM CD, and it's still saying that the drive cannot be locked. I can't try the floppy-based tools because the PCs here do not have floppy drives!

Any ideas other than a hard drive fault?

I have had that same problem before. I have a pretty high-end machine (built myself) that doesnt seem to like my HDD's. I scratched my head for a long time trying to find the solution to the problem. However, I remembered that i had a Junk PC lying around. Tried that one and it worked wonders. Kinda ironic that a high-end PC did not like the linux-based utility, but my crap-puter loved it. Solved my problem. Hopefully it solves yours too.

Thing is that I've already tried it on another computer - granted it's reasonably new too (about 12 months old). I don't really know anyone who's got an old PC I can try it on, nor do I know anyone with a modded Xbox.

Do we know why it is that some computers can lock drive which others can't. It's just that if I get another drive, whether it be a replacement of this Seagate drive or another drive altogether, and my computer cannot lock it, I'm just wasting my time.

I don't know what to do?! lol

I hade the same issue with the same drive. I was trying to use XBHDM on a newer P4 board and it could not lock the drive. Took it to my wifes older P3 board and it worked wonders. Now I just use hers to softmod. Never really found out what causes the issue.
