Swap Hard Disk On Softmod
« on: March 21, 2006, 02:27:00 AM »

Swapping HDD's in a softmoded xbox was considered impossible several months back, but after googling for a bit I've been getting some mixed messages. So what's the deal, can it be done yet or no? Are their any alternatives, like somehow playing games over a XBMC network share?

I dumped one of my games over to the stock hdd for the first time this weekend and was blown away with the performance increase. I had to clear off quite a bit off the stock hdd to make room, which is why I'd like to dump in either my 40 gig seagate, or a 60 gig deskstar I got lying around. Prolly the Seagate since the Deskstar runs hot.

yes it can be done, make sure

1) your HDD is lockable.

2) you have your eeprom.bin and use XBHDM to upgrade.

as for Networking, NO not gonna happen.

I'm trying to figure out if my hdd is lockable or not. I checked a couple of lists online but they don't say yes or no either way. I have a  40 gig Seagate ST340016A

I am in the same position as you, there are so many mixed messages to this. I used to flash the tsop but it appears that the hdupgrade with an exploit is now stable enough for this to not be a concern.

Which tutorial are using? All the hd upgrade tutorials that I have found are from 2003 and 2004 which I would assume to be outdated.

Thanks for your help anyone.

hello, after a bit googling I've found a pretty straight forward tutorial: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/203286

I'm at the burn stage now. Wish us both luck!

I softmodded mine using AR and SP and SID.

Using a tutorial I also put in a 160hd

Works like a charm.

hmm, having a rather strange problem at the moment. Put in my custom bootable linux cd, and after choosing one of the options listend in the menu, the pc reboots. I'm doing this on a very old ibm box, wondering if that's a problem. I really didn't want to have to crack into this system to do this. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

No prob.  They were perfect for modding mine.  Haven't had a single problem with them.

The "10 min" thing is a bit misguiding, but emphazies the point that it is an easy process.  If you need any help just let me know.

Couple of things worth mentioning:

1.) My old ibm computer had trouble running the bootable disk it restarted shortly after booting
2.) My late model computer failed to lock the drive with this error: "Drive on Primary Master is frozen, cannot change the security status of a frozen drive. Try to disable automatic detection on the primary ide channel in your PC bios and reboot"  Switching off autodetect didn't work, but locking the drive on my 3rd computer, with an A-open motherboard did!

Everythings running great, except this old ibm hdd makes a TON of noise.

personally I think getting a dvd burner is more cost effective both initially and long term compared to upgrading the hd.  I just picked one up from new $40 shipped with 25 blanks.

When I had my modchip installed, I just inserted my new hard-drive (without doing anything to it) in the xbox. Afterwards I inserted the SLAYER AUTO iNSTALLER and just went to FORMAT drive. It took a few seconds and everything worked PERFECTLY. No I'm wondering if you can do the same with a softmodded xbox??
