Had soft mod running for a long time on a friends box.  They have never been on live and never hooked box up online.  I don't know exactly what happened but after playing a game one day (original not backup)... the next time they turned the box on it says it's trying to update the xbox live service.  I can't remember the exact message right this moment but that's the jest of it.

I can't bypass it to boot up any game at all now.  

I tried hooking it up online to see if it could connect by some chance to finish the live update but it just keeps saying failed.

Is there anything I can do to salvage this without a chip?

I've read about programs that let you hook a xbox drive up to a PC.  Can I do that and reload it?  I don't have a backup of the drive of course, but I've used Slayer's disc on a modded box and used the factory restore feature.  

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hotswap into XboxHDM and extract the MS Dash from Slayers.  Use that to restore your C drive.  You'll then have to install a more recent exploit.  Ndure would be a good choice.
