Salvage Hard Drive Without Having Eeprom Backup?
« on: July 13, 2005, 08:50:00 PM »

I have two friends that tried soft modding their xboxes on their own and both failed for one reason or another and both didn't do a back up of their eeprom and now have locked hard drives that they can not access.

I tried about 100 times over the last two days to do the hot swap trick of turning on the xbox and pulling the IDE from it and hooking up to a PC in an effort to use xboxhdm to recreate it, but have not once been able to get it to unlock the drive, I've tried every suggest "trick" to get the hot swap to take without any luck either.

I myself have a chipped xbox that is working fine and even tried the hot swap from one xbox to the other without any luck either.

I also tried disconnecting the DVD drive's IDE cable since some people say that it will bring up a DVD drive error and the drive is locked at this stage, but sadly not one of the three Xboxes I have at my disposal came up with this screen either.

I don't know wtf to do at this point for them but was wondering if there was a way to get them back up and running even if it means using a whole new hard drive all together, though I'd like to find a way to get these drives unlocked and rebuilt.

Any suggestions?

I've done some Tivo modding in the past also and  know that they also deal with locking and unlock of drives and I even decided to try a utility (qunlock)  I found on a Tivo modding sites awhile back to unlock a locked drive, but that didn't do anything either.

Am I S.O.L.?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions that might get this thing working.

if i were you i'd keep trying to hotswap since theres nothing else you can do unless you get them a modchip and a new hard drive.

heres some pointers:

-are you sure you're pausing the computer as its scanning for the hard drive?
-are you unplugging the IDE cord from the HDD at the error screen? [it doesn't matter when as long as its after the 'clicks'
-is the video cord plugged in which allows the HDD to unlock?

-Yes, I'm pausing the computer while posting.
-I've always read to unplug before the actual error screen, I'll try unplugging once the error comes up.
-Yes the video cable is connected when trying also.

Thanks.
