The World's Easiest Softmod Hdd Upgrade Tutorial..
« on: May 24, 2005, 12:31:00 AM »

Before I begin, I'd like to start off by thanking the creators of the following items:

--X-Box
--Softmod Installer Deluxe, version 2.0
--XBox HDM
--Evox dashboard
--SmartFTP
--007: Agent Under Fire
--Crossover Cables
--Coolranch Doritos
--Swedish Fish
--Mr. Pibb (the most delicious pop in existence)

I've written this tutorial under the assumption that anyone proceeding with the following instructions has a basic knowledge of X-Box Softmodding, FTPing, and the internal workings of computers.  This tutorial is also primarily for softmod users that used Softmod Installer Deluxe on their machine who wish to upgrade to a larger drive without too much hastle.

What you'll need:

>>A properly softmodded X-Box (pref. one that used the SID, V2.0)

>>XBox HDM (I used ver 1.9)

>>A working computer tower (NOTE: I used my laptop to FTP into my X-Box, grab the necessary files and build the HDM bootdisc, and used my tower to do the HD upgrade)

>>A means to FTP into your X-Box (..I use the Evox dash which contains an onboard FTP server)

>>New HDD to upgrade to (I upped my system to a MaXtor 120GB drive that I had floating around the house)

The procedure:

Step 001: If you haven't already done so, unpack XBHDM into a folder.

Step 002: If you haven't already done so, boot up your X-Box and back up your EEPROM with whatever method you utilize to do so.

Step 003: FTP into your 'Box and copy the C-partition contents over to your PC into the XBHDM folder marked 'C' (you'll find this folder inside of the folder marked 'linux').

Step 004: Copy your EEPROM from your 'Box to the XBHDM folder marked 'eeprom' (you'll find this folder inside of the folder marked 'linux').

Step 005: Double click the 'make-iso-win' BAT file (came with xboxHDM bundle).

Step 006: Burn the resulting ISO image.

***OPTIONAL STEP 1***: Go out and buy some 'Mr. Pibb' and 'Cool Ranch Doritos'.  Put pop in fridge and doritos in pantry.

Step 007: After completing the above steps, power down your 'Box and open it up.

Step 008: Open up your computer tower and remove your HDD.  Replace it with the HDD that you're going to upgrade your X-Box with.  Ensure the HDD's jumper is set to the 'primary master' setting.

Step 009: Ensure your CD/DVD drive is set to 'primary slave'.

Step 010: Start your computer and go into your BIOS.  Set your computer to read from the CD/DVD ROM drive first.  Save the settings and reboot your computer with the HDM CD that your burned in your drive.

Step 011: When the 'X-Box HD Maker' command prompt comes up, type '1' and hit enter.

Step 012: Type '1 xboxhd'.

Step 013: Type 'yes'.

Step 014: Type '6'.

Step 015: Type '1'.

Step 016: Type 'yes'.

***OPTIONAL STEP 2***: If you had followed Optional Step 1, then go get that pop out of the fridge and the doritos from the pantry.  Proceed to eat and drink the 'Cool Ranch Doritos' and 'Mr. Pibb' while your drive formats (depending on the size of the drive, the formatting process can take anywhere from 2-6 hours).

***OPTIONAL STEP 3***: Go watch TV or read a book or sleep or exercise or....etc...until your new HDD completes formatting.

Step 017: After your drive has completed the formatting process, take out the old HDD from your X-Box and insert the new one.

Step 018: Close up the X-Box.

Step 019: ENJOY YOUR NEW UPGRADE!!!!

Please post comments here!  I hope you've found this tutorial helpful!!  ^______^

OK, to start off with a compliment, the Mr.Pibb & Dorito's part is perfect.

Other than that, this tutorial is already kinda outdated, and I'd never suggest using it.

Here's why :

Most people use an UXE softmod with virtual eeprom and c: these days.

* So .. if you FTP in (step 3) following your tut it will result in backing up the virtual c: instead of the actual c:, in other words, it won't include the softmod.

* In steps 14-16 you do generate the locking key, but the HDD never actually gets locked. So, when following step 17 & 18, step 19 will be : Dang! an error 5!

Teclis,

Thanks for the effort, its certainly something us new softmodders are in search for.

Soullar, is the tutu at http://www.how2xbox.com/harddrive.htm up to date?  I was thinking of using it sometime later this week to upgrade my box.  Last thing I would want are errors along the way, or locking problems.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If that tutu is out of date, I'll probably use the xboxhdm tutu on this forum.

Thankyou for your time.

That tut looks OK, but I'd still suggest the xboxhdm manual from this site, it is a little more detailed.

Don't worry too much about getting an error though, as long as you have your eeprom.bin, most are easily recoverable. (So, backing up the Eeprom to your PC should always be the very first thing to do)

Depending on your mod you have 2 options.

If you have an UXE setup with a shadow c: , you have to make sure you copy the actual c: , not the virtual c:. (otherwise your xbox will boot, but you'll just get the MS dash and lose the mod)

Workaround for this is to put the original 5960 dash in the ..linux\c: folder , and the tdata and udata folders in ..linux\e: (or a complete backup from e: if you want to keep your apps etc.) Make sure the udata folder contains the exploited gamesave!

Follow the tutorial and lock the disc. Now you should boot unmodded, but from the new hdd. Simply softmod it again using the exploitable game.

If you don't have a virtual c: setup, you can simply follow the tut. (you will include the softmod directly on the new disc this way)

Good luck!

What is different if you have a virtual C?  I am using Blackwars Installer(virtual C) and I am getting ready to use xbhdm to build a new HD.  I copied the entire contents of C and E into the linux folder in xbhdm for making the iso.  Is there any special steps I need to take having the virtual C?

Thanks
