Help With Bad Hdd On Unmodded Xbox
« on: December 28, 2003, 04:45:00 PM »

Unscrew the screws off the hdd case, then remove them.  Slowly take the cover off and set it aside.  Locate the drive arm, and examine the platters.

Then go buy a new hard drive.

Friend drops xbox + hard drive making clicky sound + Error7 = get a new hard drive.

There are utilities to restore the default M$ files to the new hdd (you'll need it anyway if you screw up the tsop flash).  Otherwise, you'll need to send it to M$ or some other shop to repair.  A lot cheaper to get a new hdd.

U mean open the drive? Wow, if thats what u ment ur a real dumbass
In order for a hdd to function it has to be in a vacuum
That would just further break the drive

OK people, I know I need to eventualy get a new HDD...I was planning on putting a 250gig in it anyway.

Listen, this is my problem.

1.This is a unmodded xbox

2.I dont want to do the mod chip. I want to do the 007 exploit

3.This is a unmodded xbox

4.The original HDD is not working beacause of the fall off of the TV, which means the xbox is not booting anything(remember the bios looks for the original LOCKED HDD)

5.This is a unmodded xbox

6.I want to flash the TSOP

My question is: How do I flash the TSOP on this xbox now that I cant boot to the original HDD?

Maybe Im in the wrong thread huh.gif

That was my point, shortbus.  Open the drive and look at all the pretty colors, then go buy a new one because his is already toast.

I'll speak more slowly for you next time.

Listen, this is my problem.

We're listening to you, you're just not listening to us.  You have 2 problems (actually 1 problem and 1 question):

1) You apparently have a bad hard drive.  Solution:  Go get a new hard drive. Load whatever dash you want.

2) You want to flash your tsop.  Solution: Great. Knock yourself out.  You'll probably get better answers and your questions won't scroll off the board as fast on the TSOP flashing forum.  Read the tutorials and lots of posts first.

You're still going to have to repair or get a new hard drive for your TSOP flash to be of any use.  I've never tried to flash the tsop with a bad or missing hard drive (well, never flashed tsop at all).  Not even sure if you can.  You might need to address the hard drive issue first to get around the error message.

A new HDD will not help me right now. Because if it could, I would just swap one out of any of my other three MODDED xboxes. And  like I said, I already have a 250gig waiting to put inside and loading a new dash on it will not help my problem.
Please! No more you need a new HDD answers.

OK. Finally you understand the question I am asking.

(bangs head on desk)

Why do you assume the 2 are not related?

When you boot the xbox to a disc (which you'll need to do to flash the tsop), the xbox does some rudimentary diags, and when the hdd arm grinds up against the platter (or whatever the hell is wrong with your current hdd) it kicks back an error, THUS PREVENTING YOU FROM FLASHING YOUR TSOP.

In order for you to get around this, you'll need to get a new freaking hard drive.

I promise I won't discuss the hard drive anymore.  Figure it out yourself.

ok im very confused, and no offence ColKurtz i think your a dick but maybe you know more about this than i do. but heres what i think.

his hd is fucked

he cant just throw a new one in because its UNMODDED

the retail bios dont so much like unlocked hds

and what the fuck is that about needing to boot to a disc to flash a TSOP. if your talking about a hard disc (hd) then see above.  Now im sorry if i sound like a dick, maybe i just dont understand either. please make me understand

I don't see why you guys have your panties so wadded up.  My original post about opening the hdd was a feeble attempt at humor and wasn't meant to be insulting.

Second, in order for your xbox to check if the drive is locked, it has to read the drive, right?  If your drive is toast, it won't be able to read it, right?  It'll kick back the error instead.

Why is this so hard to understand?   And why when I get snippy with people calling me an idiot and telling me to listen up am I all the sudden a dick?  If you're a rude poster, expect to be treated the same way.

Like I said, if you guys are so smart figure it out yourselves.

Ive been reading over it again and again.  nitussi, you cant put another hd in your box because it would be unlocked and the retail bios does not like that, unless of course you have your eeprom backup info on your comp which you could use to lock the hd but im going to assume you dont.

now the only thing i can think of that would get your box working again would be to swop an eeprom chip and its companion HD from another working xbox. you would be able to boot the box, flash the TSOP, prepair a new HD and then you could swop every thing back.  since the TSOP is flashed youll be able to boot the prepaired unlocked HD.

now if anybody has an easier way to fix the problem then please contribute or if you find a problem with my solution, let me know beerchug.gif

HD's do not work in a vacuum.

There is a hole in the case of every HD to enable the drive to 'breathe' (let's expanding air escape when drive becomes heated).

If there were a vacuum inside the HD casing I imagine that heat dissipation would become quite a big problem, not to mention making the case extremely delicate - how would you stop the casing being crushed by outside air pressure?

HD's did used to be sealed - many years ago (when 20MB was big).  Not heard of any that worked in a vacuum.

You are right, there is not vacuum inside of a hard drive. It is just sealed for a dust free enviroment.
