It all depends on the DVD drive in the xbox, they are not all the same, some read disks better than others, take your dvd drive out, put it in his.

both of the xbox's have samsung drives

Swap them then, see if is his drive thats at fault, or his xbox.

is one of them older and one of them newer? older samsung read cd-r, newer ones do not (so i have heard). that could be it...

i'm actually not sure...i've only got an old school thompson and a new philips

i do know that there are differences between the 2 samsungs though

It does read +rw although a bit slow. Anyways stuff like that can always vary from drive to drive. You will always have to find your own dvd brand/type that suits best and stick to it. I also don't get why this is in the exploits forum.
