you can use that gamesave. basically any gamesave that loads up evolution x (or unleash x or mxm or almost any other dashboard) will work fine because once the dashboard is running, you have ftp access to your xbox so you can transfer/move around the files that you need to. you just don't use the install evox option that is included.

Go ahead and use ltools on your 1.6, I did. It works fine. Once you pick your settings and it goes into the mini-linux to instal it will fuzz up but you don't have to see anything but the LED light on you Xbox. I'll be yellow or orange while ltools installs everything then the light will begin flashing green. At that point all you have to do is shut off the Xbox and turn it back on again and viola! You've got your dashboard.

Quick Question Regarding Ltools On A 1.6 Xbox
« Reply #4 on: January 19, 2005, 06:14:00 PM »

I GOT IT!!!!   YES!!!!  Ok, This was my experience last night.  I gotten my mem card in the mail on ebay.  And for the record DON'T BUY INTURACT MEM CARDS!  It took 2 hours and 2 different machines to try to get the save game on it.  Once was on an XP machine and another on a Win2k machine.  I used 1.02, 1.05 and the latest AR software.  This pos card would read in AR and copy the contents over.  But when I popped it out and put it back in, it was gone (oh, I did the usb cord on the tail of the controller mod).  I checked on the xbox and there blocks used, but nothing was on there.  So I said screw it, Gamestop was closed and the only thing closes I can do was the hot swap method (which wasn't that hard really).

So, I used xboxhdm tool to creat my boot cd with the gamesaved exploit (oh btw, I had a 1.6 xbox and used ltools 1.7.5 for Splinter Cell) on it.  Hotswapped it, used xbrowser and copied my exploit into the E\udata folder.  Ok, hooked everything back up  and fired up the xbox and lord and behold my gamesave exploit was there.  So, what I also did was copy from the xbox to the mem card of the gamesaved exploit just in case.  Once I ran Splinter Cell, start the game and load up my save game (btw it will say Linux) and bam, the mxm screen popped up and then started to go into the mini-linux.  This screen will be fine (so I answer my own question, lol).  Next, I ftped into my xbox and copied my c and e drive (never hurts to backup).

After that was done, I went to do a backup under ltools.  Once you hit this option, this is where the scramble of the video comes into play.  Oh, I believe this option will take a while (maybe 10 mins. not sure as I went to have a cig).  DON'T FORGET TO TAKE OFF ANY CONTROLLERS YOU HAVE HOOKED UP.  I remember reading this in another thread about someone doing this mod and had some freeze up towards the end of the installation, but I wasn't going to take a chance.

LesMcQueen,  I believe you should be fine to power cycle as it's not copying any files, but don't quote me on that one.  It just kind of made logical sense to me as it's only making a backup and not messing with the default ms stuff.

After I got the nice flashing green, power it off, power it on.  Did my saved exploit again and ftp into the xbox and copied the backup files that it made.  If you notice, I ephansize backup alot.  After months of reading the forums I notice that everyone just say to run the ude.  Well, I rather be safe than sorry and have tons of backup than a big dead piece of paper weight.

So, this time, I ran the ude installation.  I choose all options that pertain to my version of xbox, kernel, and dash version.  After all the options were done, the screen started to go scrambled again.  I unplugged all controllers and just waited for the orange led to go away.  Once it was flashing green, I powered it down and power it backup.  After the nice ms logo popped up, evox came up.

So, hopefully, this will help with the confusion of the how and when the scrambled video comes up.  People say it looks like a blocked pay television type of screen.  It was more of a commador 64 with a v-sych all out of wack to me.

Everything seem to work as it should and plus, I made another backup of the modified version also, just to compare since I don't know how the directory structure is like on a softmodded xbox.  Even got to play halo2 with a trainer, tee hee.

Quick Question Regarding Ltools On A 1.6 Xbox
« Reply #5 on: January 19, 2005, 06:27:00 PM »

OK.  So I reasoned that as I was only backing up the C drive and not installing the exploit, so I cycled the box.
All still fine.  I attempted the backup again, but got the same result.
I was still able to FTP in, and was noseying around when I came across the ltools.log file.  It looks as though a successful backup had been taken, I just never got the flashing greens to let me know.

Next up was to Install the UXE.
Used pbl-metoo, Evoxm8, generic fonts, dualboot=yes & Evox dash  Got the flashing greens this time.

I now have a modded machine!!

Just one question.  How big should the eeprom.bin file be?  Mine's 1k in size.

Hope this is of use to someone.

Thanks Ldot!!

LesMcQueen,  yup same thing here.  But it never hurts to make another backup to be on a safe side.  I got like 3-4 different backups and there all in different stages.

it should be 256kb if its smaller then the eeprom backup failed, you should use the backup option in EvoX which will make a folder called "backup" probably in the C:\ the folder will also contain several other *.txt files. all eeprom.bin backups are the same make SURE you get a copy!

Gulp.  The Evox copy I made is also 1k.

Are there any other ways to get a backup?

Ravenray, when you say 'same thing here' are you talking about the eeprom.bin backup size being 1k?

I don't usually post but thought what the hell... I soft modded my 1.0 xbox about a month ago using this method and haven't had more fun with my xbox than I am now..

Now to the point, I just checked my eeprom backup and windows will show it as 1KB but if you hold the mouse over it it should give the true size or if you right click and goto properties it should also give the true size of 256 bytes.

I absolutly wish I had modded my xbox ages ago.

Have fun

Wormheart,  Thanks for that, it gives me hope that it worked o.k., but can we clarify whether the eeprom.bin should be 256bytes or 256kilobytes?

So, should it be 256b or 256k?

Attempted my first bit of evox.ini tweaking, and installed XBMC last night.
Wow!  I'm hooked already.  MameoX and Surreal64 tonight!  8-)

was just tryin to make sure my fellow modders were prepaired for the worst...I have yet to need the eeprom.bin files on a xbox life or death situation but still!

I honestly never realized they were so small! but that makes sense because windows rounds up files less than 1byte basically no matter what the file size is.
