Crystal Softmod Problem

After my DVD went pop on a release day XBOX (1.0), I was stuck getting my KOTOR saves from the original Xbox to my new Crystal Xbox.  I ran the tutorial on http://how2xbox.com/ and used ltools to set up an ftp so I could copy all of the saves to my PC using the Splinter Cell hack and an action replay.  

However, when I tried the same thing on the Crystal Xbox it gets to the ltools menu, then the screen corrupts, and it all dies.

Can anyone help on whether there is a way to softmod a Crystal xbox so I can finally start playing my KOTOR saves again?
