Even if you can't use a boot disk like slayer's, you can still boot 007/MA/SC and load your save game if you deleted your dashboard

of course if you delete your save game then you have to open your xbox and put your HDD in your computer, unlock it, and use xboxhdm to repair your errors.

It is really amazing how simple the process is of softmodding, but people will not take the time to learn how to use it.  Sure it took me a few mess ups and calls to my brother, and plenty of IMs to moderators, but once you get it, like someone mentioned above:  2-3 minutes at the most and I am able to play back ups and total ftp control.  There is plenty of information available and with a little practice it will become second nature.  I go to a large university and I have people calling me all the time to do theirs (for a nominal fee of course).  If you ever have any questions, e-mail or IM me, if I can't help you, there are plenty of people on this board that are very schooled in the art of softmodding.

I loved my xbox when I had a softmod. Then I put some program on my box and ran it, that program deleted my entire HDD. So I was forced to get a chip. The only thing my xbox can do now that it couldnt do before is boot up when HDD is unlocked.

I do softmods for my friends. They are amazed when I give them back their xbox in a state of being "hacked".

yes, once understood, softmodding is very easy, and with the apporiate backups, anything is recoverable, where as with a sodering "accident" or flashing booboo, they can become a nightmare to fix in some cases. and a softmod can do everything that a chip can do with the exception of booting an unlocked HD.

softmods are very mis-understood.

can you install a chip without voiding the warrenty?

didnt think so.  :D

I have had 2 mod chips so far... One way back (The matrix). That modchip was complete shit if you ask me... But then again it was old haha. And i had a X2.3 pro which i loved. But i had to sell that xbox when i was in a hardspot.
So there i was with a new xbox and no modchip... When it occured to me i could just Softmod it, At first i was hesitant with all the clock loop noize people were talking about. Then i come to find out... Thats old new's!
So i did the ltools xboxhdm and UDE2 hotswap method and in 5 mins i had a modded xbox. It's great. Only thing that was wrong is that some of my games from back when i had a modchip used to run like crap, So i updated my bios (Xboxrom.bin) and now they work great.
In short i like my softmod very much, It was simple and i dont see any disadvantages if you dont plan on useing live, Or takeing a bit of work to upgrade the hdd. -Hate.

So which is the best tutorial for the 5 minute softmod?

I want to add a second harddrive with a toggle switch (softmodded) and keep the original factory drive to play live.

What's the best way to accomplish this?

I would read the UDE tutorials. Helped me. After I created my AR device and got all the files I needed in advance I got my box modded in about 5 minutes and was FTPing. 2 hours later I had a 120G HDD installed and loaded with aps and backups. Been working fantastically ever since about 7 months or so.

But watch out for Live. It's harder than you may think to get it to work lately. In order to softmod with a new HDD you need to install one of the exploits then install either UDE or UXE on your Original Hardrive. At least thats what I did to get the keys and such. Then after you create your new HDD you can uninstall the dash and UDE/UXE and the savegame exploits from you original HDD. However the fact that you at one time had this stuff installed now makes your Original HDD unusable on live. Apparently the uninstall and the deleteing of files does not get "all of it". So they can still tell you have a modded box. Click this link to read my experience with this. I had UDE 2 installed on my Xbox for 5 minutes just to transfer a file. then I uninstalled and deleted but I'm still banned.

So is there a way to avoid this from happening?

Adding the second drive without affecting the factory drive?

Or is there something else that could be done?

Has anyone used softmod installer deluxe and/or auto installer? I believe they have a backup and restore function as well.

This is a quote from the instructions:
QUOTE
10. Now is the time to make a backup of your modded C drive. This comes handy just in case
a game tries to update your dashboard. If this ever happens, just use the "Restore
Mod Backup". If you ever want to remove the Softmod (mainly for Xbox Live purposes)
you can restore your backup of C Drive by using the "Restore C Backup" option
    in the Softmod menu.

only limitations i can see is you cant use a unlocked hard drive in it, where as chip xbox u can, i have 200gig maxtor hd in my soft mod xbox with over 300 evox skins to choose from, also can make your own skins just by deleting the jpgs out of the original skins and copy your iown jpg nto it instead obviosly u can do that with a chip xbox also that was slightly off topic, but back on topic yep you can not use a unlock hd in a soft modded xbox, the way i see if if you fu.ck up your dasboard and you get a red light, your xbox will still play original xbox games, then you just load up the 007 game or what ever it is u used and your back in bussiness again to restore your xbox back how you want it, also a mate of mine has got a xbox that has been tsop flashed but he cant have a hard drive bigger than 137gigs, and some xbox that have been chipped dont support flash upgrade so they to are stuck with 137gig limit, unless they softmod there already chipped xbox then they can use over 137gigs, so overall softmodding is much better, i dont like the idear of having a forien object {chip} inside my xbox anyway.

..............IMPORTANT DONT EVER DELETE YOUR SAVE EXPLOIT GAME OTHERWISE EVEN IF YOUR XBOX CAN PLAY ORIGINALS YOU WONT BE ABLE TO LOAD THE EXPLOIT FROM THE ORIGINAL........................................................

just soft modded my box!! And I love it!! It's not that hard at all, once you actually do it. All the information may sound hard at first, but once you start doing it, it's quite easy! The only problem i'm having is, my 160GB hard drive is saying that the G partition is at 0.00  <_< ...anyone know how to fix this? I used the uxe installer...with the .67 patcher. I'm running the unleash dash..
