you can't play xbox with an unlocked hard drive...

not without a chip, or a TSOP flash, although I'm not too sure about the TSOP either, I'm just learning about them.

A tsop flash acts exactly like an early generation chip.  No OS, but all other features available in the bios will work.

could a TSOP lock a unlocked hard drive?
if so, that may be my ticket to a temp. fix until my X3 arrives....

You could, but to flash the tsop you would need to boot from a locked hdd.
