This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I swear by older v4 kernel specific UDE1 font for older kernels..  I find they boot faster and never have the random freezes on the odd boot..  Problem is, although the v4 font is probably the easiest exploit of all time to install manually there is no autoinstaller out there for it. Also it does not use dual boot by default.
For the record, I have had failures with LTools on a 3944.  The installer ran fine but it would freeze on boot..  I tried Metoo/4981 and PBL-Lite/4981.. Perhaps nkpatcher would have helped..  (BTW LTools booted fine in both cases)
In anycase, that box runs PBL-Lite and nkpatcher fine with version 4 fonts.
