Glad to see you made good use of ltools though. Just read through the thread quickly. You're right the update.xbe is not needed anymore. The installer will generate the UDE1 or UDE 2 update.xbe from the present dashboard from a set of patches.
And choosing UDE2 with a Region 2 or 4 xbox should be safe. The installer check your region and will abort an UDE2 install if the region is not 1.

Im not sure but i think that the home edition is a lot more user friendly for begginers using linux.
