This is a quick note to all the newbs like me out there trying to get softmods up and running. While I'm pretty sure my kernel won't take kindly to the MA exploit anyway, I'd like to note that there are THREE versions of Mech Assault floating around out there, not the two I previously thought:
1.) Original -- you need this
2.) "Game of the Year" -- the disc looks EXACTLY like the original, the box may be different, but the way to tell is to look at the number in laser-etching on the back of the disc. Per the tuts at www.xbox-linux.org (thanks guys!), my disc (MS02308L) is the newer, BAD one. If you don't know about this when you go to the store, you could be out about fifteen bucks (like me).
3.) Platinum -- says "Platinum Edition" in big, silver print on both box and disc. Avoid, but you probably knew that already.
Lucky for me, I had been planning on getting MA to play, and it seems that it's a bit tough to do the exploit if you actually plan on keeping MA savegames lying around. So... I for one got Splinter Cell (which, as I understand it, has exploits that work on my kernel) but you can save yourself the grief and make sure you have an ORIGINAL disc. It would be nice if this were spelled out clearly in tuts and/or exploit READMEs. If I'm out of line, just ignore me
