well i did the mechinstall stuff to get linux onto my dashboard... i dont understand what the linux guid means by this:

Backing up your Xbox Hard Disk Key

In case of problems, it is important that you have your Xbox hard disk key.

  1. Insert the MechAssault game
  2. Select "CAMPAIGN"
  3. Select "Emergency Linux"
  4. Get the key: Using a telnet connection to 192.168.0.3 (a USB keyboard will not work in the Emergency Linux)

telnet 192.168.0.3

log in as root, password xbox, and type

xbox_tool -a

Then write down the hard disk key.

This key allows you to put the XBox hard drive in your computer to fix it should Linux or something mess it up.

Hit Start, Run, and type telnet (ip) in Windows.

Search the internet for tips on telnetting or Windows telnet clients, its a program almost similar to DOS.

Nah doesn't change anything...a window should come up...

Search the internet for a program called "PuTTy", you can use it to connect to your XBox (make sure the telnet checkbox is checked, and put your XBox IP in the hostname thingy).

You sure the XBox is turned on to the right place?
Is your PC's IP address starting with 192.168.0. ?
Is it hooked up correctly?

Look in the tutorials for an FTP'ing tutorial, or a networking tutorial, which should help get you by.

Xebian is the best, and pretty much the only Linux for softmods.

I don't know if its hard to set up, but once you get into the main interface its hella-easy.
