Ms Dashboard Missing Once I Have Installed Evox
« on: April 09, 2004, 05:03:00 AM »

I used jsrlepage tutorila on how to softmod an xbox using the splinter cel game exploit. I can boot to EvoX but when I tell it to go to the MS Dashboard it shows me the EvolutionX logo and goes back to EvoX. I don't really need the MS Dashboard but I want to know I didn't screw anything up. Thanks.

check your evox.ini file and see what it points to to launch the MS Dashboard
most likley it said default.xbe
i am guessing that currenlty default.xbe is evox on you xbox, and you ms dashboard is called something else (like msDash.xbe)
just point evox to it

you might need to hex edit it, because it doesn't like the soft hack
or just get tHc dashboard that is already prehacked

you need to hex edit the file that gives you the black screen to make it use the new fonts (assuming you are using a font hack)
i don't remember how to do that, hopefully someone will reply with an answer
or just do a search

go and download XTF2XFT Patcher (available on the main XS page). load up your xboxdash.xbe and patch it. rename the patched file to xftdash.xbe. copy that to your xbox C drive. in your evox.ini point MS dash -> xftdash.xbe. you should be okay after that.

ok thanks a lot guys. here's my whole story. i was told to use slayer's auto evox install from the tutorial above about using the SC gamesave. i extracted the slayer iso. i then went to the folder system\all\c and after backing up my current xbox C folder i copied all the files out of the slayer package all to get a c drive that was patched or upgraded my live. i hope this makes sense. i then downloaded the bigfonts and put those in the xbox c folder under fonts and renamed the old fonts .bak. i did all that a while ago. then i was stupid and did the xftpatch thing. i copied my xboxdash.xbe to a folder renamed it to default.xbe and then patched it. then i used somebody's easy signer (the topic is pinned if u want it) to sign the file using xbedump and a premade batch file. then i renamed the file xboxdash.xbe and uploaded it to my xbox c folder. i didnt know that i had to keep a current unmoddified version of xboxdash.xbe in order to boot to evox. i edited the evox.ini to tell it C:\xboxdash.xbe for the msdashboard and i rebooted. i lost my ftp connection cuz it rebooted. i then came to a screen telling me i needed to send my box in for repair and the led was flashing red and green. so i went out and bought the game splinter cell at fye music or something like that for $15. i put the game in and got evox to boot using the gamesave. then i uploaded the copy of xboxdash.xbe that i had from slayer's auto exe installer. i then booted up with no disk and up comes evox. ya hooo. but when i tried to go into the msdashboard it didnt work. so i got the xboxdash.xbe that i had patched with xftpatch and i renamed it to xftdash.xbe like i should have to begin with. i uploaded that and pointed to it in evox.ini. but the msdashboard still did not boot. i went back and read a tutorial in one of the links above and i found out that i needed to name the original fonts (unmodified) .xft in order for my xftpatched xftdash.xbe to find them. and wow it worked. i could go right into the msdashboard. i mainly want the dashboard for playing dvds. i have tried dvdx2 but i want to use my remote. i know there is probably a tuturial on using the remote\dongle with dvdx2 but i am lazy. so thanks to everyone. i think this is the best way to leave my system unless i should tsop flash my bios or use a different font exploit (the modified mechinstlaler fonts). it might be nice to put an option to go to evox from my msdashboard instead of having to hard reset but ill look into that with some tuturials. hope this helps others that find themselves in my shoes. thanks. jon

Quick answer: Because the MS Dashboard loads anything in the DVD tray when it boots (So you can run games, dvd's etc while in the MS Dashboard) it won't run without major modification, its probably easier to just reboot.

With gamesave hacks you'll NEVER get to an unmodified or an XTF modified MS Dashboard, but with font hacks you'll get to an XTF modified dashboard, and with audio a completely unmodified dashboard.
