Quick Question

It shouldn't take that long to load a BIOS... 5 to 10 seconds max. If you can tell me your file setup (a checklist), I can try see if there's something wrong.

1) Do you have the right keys, RC4 and EEPROM keys?
2) How are you launching EvoX? at your C: partition or in the gamesave folder
  2b) If you're doing it in the gamesave folder, have you properly editting the BFM Bios
        with XBTool to look for the dash in that folder?
3) You could try removing your evox.ini file (if it's not there, it loads default settings) to see if it's a ini file problem

- ZoGger

EDIT: I figure I should point out, that if you really can't get PBL working with the gamesave, you could just launch EvoX instead. You'll have to sign all your XBE, but I figure since you can't eject your disc and use a a DVD backup anyway... you'll be running software of the HD.

EDIT: EDIT: Another advantage of getting EvoX up first, is that at least you're up and running. You can then try get PBL to work by running it as an app at your own pace.

Well VERY good news... I just downgraded my dash to 4920, now I am free to use to do the exploits if need be.

1) I grabbed the keys from a signed PBL 1.3 zip
2) I FTPed evox.ini,evoxdash.xbe some skins onto the C drive (through a evox gamesave, but then I edited the gamesave, took out evox and put in PBL)
3) Not sure about this... are you on IRC anywhere or have an instant messager? (I understand if you don't want to talk or are busy... just figured it'd be easier to communicate)

Quick Question
« Reply #17 on: January 19, 2004, 01:57:00 AM »

Thanks for clearing things up a little Zogger. So now what i want to follow this exactly and then im done ? The boot.cfg that came with my pbl 1.3.5i is in this format and starts.
RC4Key 0x58 0x62

The 1.3 Signed format is and starts like

Romfile xboxrom.bin
#AltRomfile xboxrom2.bin
RC4Key 0x59 0x36

Can i just use the 1.3.5i boot.cfg that has the values and format stated above. The reason i ask this question is becasue in the notes.txt included in pbl it says RC4 key is not in boot.cfg but it looks like there is an rc4 key in the boot.cfg.

I compaired it to the 1.3 Singed version boot.cfg and they are different format should i use the boot.cfg that came with 1.3.5i and am i ready to just rename default.xbe to evoxdash.xbe and copy the pbl files into c:/ ? Even though this thread provided lots of feedback. I really dont want to wreck this in anyway and am still waiting for what i exactly step for step want to do. Thanks again I hope im almost done. So should i just start doing this now ?

Rename it to evoxdash.xbe. Then, copy all the files for PBL to your C partition. You should end up with these files:

CODE
C:default.xbe (PBL 1.3.5 XBE)
C:boot.cfg
C:notes.txt
C:bg.jpg
C:font.jpg
C:phoenix2d_logo1.jpg
C:Biosesxboxrom.bin

C:evoxdash.xbe (Evox dash that was originally named default.xbe)*
C:evox.ini          (optional file; EvolutionX configuration)
C:Skin               (optional folder; EvoX Skin folder)

What happens is when you boot up your XBOX, the fonts load, causing C:default.xbe to run. C:default.xbe is PBL which loads the bios file C:Biosesxboxrom.bin. The BIOS file (unless it was modified) is designed to look for C:evoxdash.xbe.

Umm Zogger. So i can rename and copy over these files now right. Im guessing i have the right boot.cfg and it has the right keys if they are not all 00x0 am i correct. Does the format of the boot.cfg I have match the format of your 1.3.5i ? Thanks again im waiting for your response and thanks.

C:default.xbe (PBL 1.3.5 XBE)
C:boot.cfg
C:notes.txt
C:bg.jpg
C:font.jpg
C:phoenix2d_logo1.jpg
C:Biosesxboxrom.bin

CODE
C:\default.xbe (PBL 1.3.5 XBE)
C:\boot.cfg
C:\notes.txt     (this is optional, but if you want to keep it you might as well)
C:\bg.jpg
C:\font.jpg
C:\phoenix2d_logo1.jpg
C:\Bioses\xboxrom.bin

Make sure that you copy the font signed PBL default.xbe, otherwise when the fonts load, they'll try to load your new PBL C:\default.xbe, but if it's not font signed, you'll run into an Error 21. The boot.cfg are usually set with:

Romfile xboxrom.bin

So which is why I've named the file in the Bioses folder xboxrom.bin. You can have a different name, but you need to make sure they match correctly.

- ZoGger

EDIT: Cut-Paste of boot.cfg [in case you're wondering]

CODE
RC4Key (key removed)
EEPROMKey1_0 (key removed)
EEPROMKey1_1 (key removed)
LEDSequence orgg
Romfile xboxrom.bin
Timeout 300000
Debug false

Hmm, looking at an archive I have, that filename looks legit, so it should be already font signed. In that case you can skip the whole using xbedump to resign the PBL default.xbe. Use the default.xbe as it is.

- ZoGger

EDIT: Of course, it doesn't hurt resigning an already signed XBE. But based on that filename though, you shouldn't have to.

If you do, try search the file for the [Menu] section.

Somewhere within the two outer curly braces (open and close braces)  check that you have these lines

CODE
               Section  "Launch Menu"
               {
                               Section "Games"
                               {
                                               AutoAddItem "e:\games\"
                                               AutoAddItem "f:\games\"
                                               SortAll
                               }
                               Section "Apps"
                               {
                                               AutoAddItem "e:\apps\"
                                               AutoAddItem "f:\apps\"
                                               SortAll
                               }
               }

If you want, find the latest EvoX 3935 Build and use it to both upgrade (if you have an earlier version), as well as to obtain a properly configured ini file. It might have excess options (trainers, for example), but you can always delete the options you don't want.

If you do upgrade, don't forget to resign the XBE file and rename it to evoxdash.xbe if it isn't named that already.

- ZoGger

EDIT: I've already explained this in a few other threads, so rather than using up more server hd space, I'll point you straight to the posts.

---Link to my post to help you out if things don't work the way they should---

I'd read them both first (especially my second one... while it may not make sense the first time you read it, it'll be more clear what I mean when you start following the tutorials in the first one). The second one is about an error a lot of people make when relinking the dash.

Hmm.. <scratch head>

Let's see... first you could try commenting all the Sort related commands and seeing if anything shows up after you restart/reload EvoX. If that works, you could try commenting out the first "SortAll" that you have within the SortStart and SortEnd, or move it outside of the "SortStart" "SortEnd" section. You seem to have the proper AutoAddItem lines... and make sure the apps/games in the folders have a XBE by the name of default.xbe or else they won't show up.

- ZoGger

PS. You could try copy and paste my code above to see if a menu shows up.

Zogger u rox. Ok you were right about everything so far the comment's worked for my launch menu. Now all I have is this lousy dash to get going and im set. Ive downloaded hexworkshop and went to edit find 78 00 74 00 66 and 00009FE8 and it does not find any of those am i doing something wrong ? And in the tutorial when it says relink the evo.ini ms dash to the new one is that the top entry. Thanks again.

His reference to 00009FE8 was about an address and not an actual hex value. Both tutorials revolve aorund the same principle, but interestingly they're slightly different in that the first one tells you to change a single reference of X T F, versus the second one saying to change all references of X T F.

That aside when you're using Hex Workshop, first open a copy of your xboxdash.xbe file, then goto:

EDIT --> FIND

You should get a dialog box with pulldown menus.

Under Type: Select Hex Values
As Value Enter: 7800740066
Select for Direction: Down

What might have happened was you were looking for the text string "7800740066" in which case it wouldn't work.

An alternative way, if you don't seem to like hexadecimal values is searching for the string.

Under Type: Select Text String
As Value Enter: xtf
Select for Direction: Down
And Under Options Select: Unicode String

CODE
MSDashBoard   = "c:\xboxdash.xbe"

Change it to:

CODE
MSDashBoard   = "c:\hackdash.xbe"

After you do that and restart, the MS Dashboard option should take you to your original MS Dash.

- ZoGger

EDIT: If you really need to know though, you'll need a program called xbedump. Copy the file xbedump.exe to the same folder as the XBE you want to sign. Refer back to the second post or so on this topic if you want to see xbedump's usage

EDIT: EDIT: One last check, make sure you have renamed your original font files (Xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf     to    Xbox.xft and Xbox Book.xft).

Zogger owns. That sounds great about not having to sign anything. But do I still need to hex edit and change the xtfs to xfts in the dashboard im going to rename. Next time Im expecting not to ask any questions. Is there a tutorial on how to undo what I just did or can you.
