Downgrade Dash?
« on: January 16, 2004, 09:23:00 AM »

I've never got a chance to fully experiment with the 5659 dash, so I can't really comment on whether any of the font exploits will work with it. I can, however, tell you that downgrading your dash will remove any problems (related to this issue... It won't, of course, help if you've misnamed/misplaced files   biggrin.gif ).

You need to obtain a copy of the 4920 dash, either from someone or from the Slayer's AutoInstaller disc. As for how to downgrade, as I always seem to do, I'll point you to Morden's walkthrough on his incredible long pinned thread (and still growing!!).

--- Morden's Exploit Installer/Remover (link to walkthrough [page 52]) ---
http://forums.xbox-s...&t=86133&st=765

If after you've downgraded, you still have problems, it might help if you tell us the layout of your files and what you did. That way we can see if you've accidentally goofed somewhere. A little note: the default.xbe (EvoX) that comes in the Free-XEvox.rar is already font signed); if you're trying to upgrade your EvoX while using the tutorial, you'll need xbedump to resign the default.xbe that comes in the official build. I'd get the tutorial up and running first, then when you know you got everything setup, work on upgrading (which isn't hard, but can cause a lot of headaches if you're trying to find the culprit to your softmodding woes).

Try downgrading your dash and let us know how it goes.

Yup, works here. I can't thank you enough!!! You don't know how long i've been searching, and reading trying to do this. Luckily i had the iso i downloaded the other day. I've learned SOOOOooooo much so far on everything relating to the XBox, but before i made a mackup of my HD, i already started playing the game that came with it, which already installed dashboard 5659 before knowing what i know now of the fixes.

Thanx again so much!!! I saved all that stuff and your instructions, and burning it on DVD along with my other harddrive stuff, JUST IN CASE. Heheh.

I tried to downgrade mine but I get an error 21.  I can still load 007 gamesave and FTP into my box, but i can't access my MS dash... any ideas what went wrong, i did the steps exactly as they are.

When is the Error 21 coming up, and if you're trying to use a dashboard exploit, which one are you using?

- ZoGger

PS. If you're using a font exploit, it might be that you need to sign your default.xbe with xbedump

The error comes up after I transfer the 4290 dash files from an extracted slayers iso and reboot to the ms dash.  I have read that no exploits work with the latest live 2.0 dash, and so i made it first on my list to downgrade.  However, I am following the http://www.xbox-scen...enix-loader.php tutorial and in all honesty, sadly, I'm not sure what exploit that uses.  If I don't need to replace my dash, then everything is fine because I already uploaded my original dash files and I can boot into the MS dash with those.

If you plan on sticking with the MA/007 Phoenix setup, you should be okay with having the newer Live 2.0 dash. That setup should still work with the latest dashes, so you don't need to worry about downgrading. People usually downgrade their dash if they're trying to get a font exploit or audio exploit working.

I've personally gotten a MA gamesave to bootup in a 5659 dash, so I know it's possible (as you probably have found out since you were able to use it to downgrade).

Hmm... what about PBL 1.3 and the old version of evox?  Are those both compadible with live 2.0?  I tried using a gamesave including PBL 1.3 with the new evox and my screen was just a fluxuation of colors.  Not sure what that's about, but that's not really on topic with this thread so...

Ah, the "fluxuation of colors" might be because you have a newer XBOX with a focus encoder. You probably should use PBL 1.3.5i. Also, grab a X2 4979 or higher BFM BIOS file. You'll probably need to get xbedump and resign the new PBL default.xbe with the habibi signature, too.

- ZoGer

PS. Depending on what release package of PBL 1.3.5i you obtain, you might need to edit the boot.cfg and add the RC4 and EEPROM keys.

EDIT: Just in case you're not familiar with xbedump here's it's usage:

CODE
xbedump default.xbe -habibi

resigns default.xbe with the habibi signature (Mechassault/007 gamesave exploit). xbedump creates a new file called out.xbe that is a resigned copy of default.xbe. Move/disgard of the original default.xbe, then rename out.xbe to default.xbe

Hi people thanks for all your help, I got my dashboard downgraded and now I have Evox Working :-D.
Thanks Zogger for posting that link and to Morden for his tutorial.
Only one remaining problem, when running an app i.e. Xsnes9x then exiting to EvoX it gives an error 21 and I have to reset.

Great to hear you got into EvoX smile.gif . If you're following his tutorial straight as it is, you have your fonts loading EvoX directly. If that's true you're going to need to sign every XBE file you want to run. The program that will resign XBE's is called xbedump. Because you're using the font exploit, you need to use xbedump to sign every XBE you want to run with the font signature.

Usage:
CODE
xbedump default.xbe -font

In the example above, I'm trying to resign the file default.xbe with the font signature (notice the -font). xbedump will create a new xbe file called "out.xbe" that is a font signed version of the original "default.xbe". Rename/disgard the original default.xbe so you don't confuse it with the new signed version, then rename "out.xbe" to "default.xbe".

If you don't want to do this, you can try setting up PBL to load first. PBL is a BIOS loader that loads a BFM BIOS off the hard drive (boot from media version of a chip BIOS), and that removes any signature and media checks that the XBOX originally has. (meaning no more signing). If you don't want to deal with signing (isn't difficult, just get tedious if you have a lot of programs you're trying to run), and would like to try PBL, rather than repeat myself, here's a link of where I made a file checklist and what to do:

hi

first of all thanks for this threads i managed to boot evox:)
ill have 21 error too, so i thougt i try PBL1.3.5i_signed_font_exploit.ill also placed the X2 4977 BFM bios in the bioses folder.
but when it start flickers the screen and i see a text.
than i see something blue red white flickering (i think its the phoenix logo).
after that a blackscreen attempts with : press a to load menu, screen still flackering.
than nothing happens, blackscreen.
ok so i try to manage the MS dashboard. ill hexedit the xboxdash.xbe following the tutorials, renamed to xftdash.xbe signed it with the -font command and uploaded to the root of c . ill linked the evox.ini to xftdash.xbe. when i select the MS dashboard in evox error 21 attempts.
i have                      M$ Dashboard 4920
                              Bios Unknown
                               Kernel 1.00.5530.01

is there a alternative way than pbl?
maybe its the kernel version, i heard something from a focus chip who cause all this trouble:(
sorry for my bad english and thanks for any help

Ah, Retron thanks for posting your specs, helps a lot in figuring out what's wrong.

Err, well, good news. I think I know what's wrong...  laugh.gif

Bad news... at the moment there's no real way around it,  sad.gif .

Your dash is fine, and as you said the reason your screen is on the fritz is because you have the newer focus encoder. I would ordinarily recommend PBL 1.3.5i WITH a newer BIOS X2 4979 and above... but you said you have the 5530 kernel... which isn't compatible with any PBL at the moment. The only thing you can do now is have EvoX boot up instead of PBL, but yeah, you'll have to sign all your XBEs.

As for the xtfdash.xbe, make sure you're changing the unicode instances of X T F, so when you do a search with the hex editor, check the Unicode option. (It's encoded as unicode so the characters will have an empty char into between them [they look double spaced]). Oh, and just incase, when you sign things with xbedump, it makes a resigned copy of the xbe called out.xbe. You need to copy over the out.xbe file and not the original xtfdash.xbe

Hmm, which fonts are you using? (free-x, reloaded, etc)

The led firing is due to the font set you're using; you could try a different one (or see if modfiying the LEDSequence line in your boot.cfg changes anything... haven't tried it so I can't say if that'll work)... here's a linkie:

http://forums.xbox-s...hl=flashing red

This is how to modify the Bert and Ernie: Reloaded fonts to change the LED firing.

Since you got your setup running though, you could try a different font set, such as the bigfontz and see if that helps your LED firing. If I come across anymore font hacking guides, I'll redit this post.
