read the tutorials.  Use the search button - it is not dead.

You need to unlock the HD and copy over the proper files.

There are many tutorials on how to do this.  Check out what is pinned in this section

And the problem you got is not the default.xbe, because you said you saw the Phoenix logo? after that the PBL loads the Bios, maybe you are not using a correct Bios or not using a Signed PBL.
Check the Boot.cfg the Bios assigned is the Romfile, I sugest you put the new 4979.06.bin as the bios, download it and change Romfile bios to Romfile 4979.06.bin and copy the bios to the C root.

even if your xbox hard-drive is locked, your pc bios will still detected it as a hard-drive and you can still boot to windows but sometimes, windows might take a longer time to startup if your hard-drive is still locked...

the easiest OS that i can boot up my xbox hdd with is windows 2k...

Hi all.

Yes, my problem was that I didn't have a bios installed on PBL so it's not finding anything to boot, hence the blank screen, hence no FTP, hence no retail games.

Tempted by the hot-swap, but last time I treid that, I broke my PC and had to get that repaired too.

Also, what is Live-info? I've been around on the scene for well over a year now and have never heard of it!

I so mad with myself for messing this up.  Have soft-modded two other xboxs without any problems; just goes to show what can be done in one moment of madness.

Thanks to all you take the time to read and reply, any more suggestions/advice is greatly appreciated.

-Steve.

QUOTE (ar_156 @ Dec 1 2003, 12:44 PM)
I test it again without success....

I connect a locked xbox HD to the PC IDE cable, turn the PC on, it takes longer time to start Win 2K, after that I start Live-info, it did not detect the xbox locked HD, neither the Device Manager detect the HD....

on the device ide drop down box, what physical drive number did you pick??? since your hard-drive is still lock anyways, try to let bios detect your hard-drive so windows can find it in the device manager...
