Why Do People Mod?
« on: October 17, 2003, 03:11:00 AM »

Because mod chips, while they require a bit more effort (God forbid), are much more reliable.  I have never had a clock loop.  I have never had an error 21 or an error 16.  I can use an unlocked hard drive.  I don't have to use stupid PC programs and keys to swap drives....just use ConfigMagic and go.

Why I soft mod:
1) For the Knowledge
2) I have a 6 for 7 record on PS1 and that is only 7 wires, with nothing close to D0

You should use the skills you have.  I'm a coder, so thats what I do.
If you got the mad soldering iron skills, go at it.
Or, you use a soft mod if you don't want to crack the case.
I didn't at first, then I relised, 5gigs just isn't enuff.

PS: If you have a mod chip, and didn't use pongo, I give you credit, I could NEVER get D0.

All this is possible with a tsop flash using the 007 hack.  Take no offense, I've been soldering chips since the enigmah, but with the ability to now flash the tsop with a hack bios (i.e evox, matrix, etc) using 007 there really is absolutely no reason to use a chip.  Everything that is possible using a chip is possible using the tsop/007 method.  I can only believe that the chips are not dying out because people are still believein you need them, because the manufacturers have put all the R&D costs into developing them and they don't want the market to go away.

And as for reliability, if you flash the tsop then disable the write points, you could not fuck it up if you tried.  A chip can always come unseated or unsoldered.

sykotek - agreed.  if you're really industrious, you can solder leads to the flash points and hook them to a dpst switch, and switch on/off flash support for your tsop.

the one advantage chips currently offer is that you can enable/disable them on 1.2 xboxes and above.  with 1.0 and 1.1, you can flash the 1mb tsop and switch the address lines to enable a copy of the retail bios.

I agree aswell, tsop flashing is by far the best way to mod the xbox, at least imo.  I cant understand why people still get chips either, other than the v 1.2.

I`m also quite confused over the  flaming wars people get into.  I've been kicked out of and even banned from irc channels just for asking a question about tsop flashing.  after rewording the question (it had nothing to do with the tsop!) people answered me.

chan must have been run by x-ecutor or something.

For the record, I havent messed with the exploits to much, and have never touched TSOP flashing, Im a X2.0 Pro user.  Why do I stick with it?

1.) Its already in there
2.) Only takes 5 minutes to install on a new xbox
3.) Can switch BIOS just as easy as  the BIOS loader stanneh mentioned.
4.) I think ( maybe falsely so) that the exploits would be easier for MS to defeat than the Mod chips are.  Now I may be wrong, but so far, the exploits are 1-1 when M$ fixed the exploit thru the XBL update a few weeks back.
5.) Altho there hasnt YET come a GREAT 1MB BIOS, im sure there will come one along that will have some function I want or desire.  AFAIK, TSOP limits you to just the size of the flash chip in the xbox correct? 256, 512 k i think?

Thats about all I can think of for now.  I dont care how ya like to mod yer xbox, as long as ya can do with it what you want, then its the best option for you.  For me, I like to have the widest amount of options available , and I think , for now, the exploits still have a couple weaknesses compared to the chips, but hey, Have fun either way.

I was comparing mod chips to dashboard exploits, not TSOP flashing.  I consider mod chips and TSOP flashes to be in the same vein.

So does the 007/bert&ernie hack work on every xbox to date?

I dont realy wanna crack the seal on a new box.

Is there a gauranteed workaround to the clock loop problem?

Cheers

3 days!  I unplug mine like overnight and I gotta reset the clock.

I've been using the audio hack for fear of the clock loop, I just dont want to waste more time getting it to work when it loops.

Mine loops, all the time, and to be honest, I don't mind.
I always come out of it, with minimal work, which is NO FUN!!

I almost wish something horable would would happen (non-perminet) so I could fix it!

And no I am not nutz.
