Do I Have To Backup My Original Hd?

Still waiting on my modchip to arrive (hopefully today) & have already sourced a new 60gb HD. As the orig 10gb HD in my Xbox only has a few savegames from PGR2 on it I don't feel the need to return these saved games to the new drive (Have only had xbox for 1 week now), so can I simply install the new HD at the same time as my modchip and start totally fresh using Slayers Boot disk or is there something like a serial number/unique info etc... that needs to be transfered from the oringal drive to the new drive in order for the Xbox to work?
