I am new to the scene also and had a similar view of the F: drive. Luckily the guys at #Xbox-Scene were able to set me straight before I did anything dumb. They told me that F: is used as a cache during gameplay.

No F: would probably mean no ability to play games.

F: is extra space above 8gigs on the hard drive.  X:, Y: and Z: are the game caches.  The F: is inaccessible to the original xbox bios/dashboard/etc, so it is not a game cache.  I would double check any other info you got from the same people who told you that.

Eh...
Okay.  To set things straight:
On the harddrive that comes in your xbox, there is, by default, a C Partition (called System, bout 400mb), E Partition (User Save, bout 5 gigs), X, Y and Z partitions (Temporary Cache Partitions, 700mb each).
(those were from memory, go ahead and correct me if they are off)
When the xbox was first released, it shipped with a Western Digital 8gb Harddrive, and these partitions took up the entire drive.  Later, newer xboxes shipped with 10gb harddrives, but the same partitioning system was used and only 8gb are accessable.  Adding the "F" drive / partition allows you to use those other 2gb on a default drive.
On an upgraded harddrive, you format the first 8 gb with the default partitions, then you HAVE to add the F drive in order to access the rest of the space on it.
This F partition is purely for storing media and game backups, as it is not used by official xbox software in any way.

You do not have to have an unlocked drive to format or use this partition.  It won't format at all if you only have an 8gb so no worries.

ct8055:  Thanks for the replies. I tried to format tonight using the evox menu method. Told it to format, and it took less than a second. I was pretty sure that there was no F since it went so fast, but while reloading my original F, I gave it a shot... Hell yeah I have F:

i'm new wheres a tutorial for that method

Great info, guys. I had no idea F: was available to the default HD in some systems. I thought it was just for custom drives. One more question though before I do this. If I do this and some time in the future decide to restore the HD to its original configuration (say, for use with Xbox Live), would having an F partition be a bannable offense, or would it simply be undetectable? I'm using the font exploit, not the audio exploit, in case it matters.
