Failed Mod, Or Is It?
« on: April 07, 2004, 06:28:00 AM »

I dont know where to go from here, so if someone has a direction to point me in,
it would be muchly appreciated.

I installed an Aladdin Adv + and DO wire (from chip to bottom point) and checked for good
connection (multimeter) on all solder points. Success!!
Didnt solder BT wire as at the time I thought it was optional,
put it back together, turned it on, (quick power on button) and MS Dash came up
which then went to clock setting.
I didnt think it was necessary to set it so I pressed the eject and ever since Ive
got orange/red fragwith no video or audio.
So soldered chip end of DO wire to earth, tested, no change.
Then removed pin header and DO wire, checked again for good connections but still frag.
DAMN MAN, scratch the head, stare at it, pull it apart , looked (with glasses and
a magnifying glass) for hours.
nothing, so put chip back in, this time with BT wire attached with the same result.

So the question is: Can the bios and or hard drive be affected by doing what I did?
What could the eject button have triggered off (apart from the obvious non working, fragging,
flashing, frustrating, tormenting, mind rambling.....................)

Without parts to swap over Im out of ideas so any suggestions would be welcome,
 Thanks

Only thing I could think to check is if there is a short somewhere caused during soldering. Sounds like you have checked for that though. I cannot think that just leaving off the BT wire and pressing the eject could do anything drastic. Let us know what you find with it

Just a thought but add a little solder to D0 point. Maybe got fudged somehow. I had the same problem from soldering and resoldering too much. D0 got wore down and I added a bit of solder to re-create the connection, and all is well. Not sure why it happened because you didn't set the clock, but it sounds like a coincidence, but who knows. Electronics can be funny things sometimes.

Hmmm, Im now wondering if its a PSU problem as I get a "Light Sting Zing"
by touching the metal body of the console when the AV lead is removed (turned
on) and an even lighter one with it turned off, but then again, suppose this
is normal as the power has to go somewhere if it cant get to the telly.

Ill go search for "Voltage measurements" out of the plug and see how that rates.

Meanwhile "Ploddy Ploddy forward"

I would say it's not normal. I would measure to see if there is any voltage coming off the metal of the case.. don't forget that you will have to find something different to ground on. If so then you have something touching and getting grounded to your case. It's not voltage that gives you the zing it's current and the AV port would not cause this.

Did you try to add a little solder to D0?
