you know, my dash is the one with Xbox Live built in so I'm starting to think that this dash
version isn't supported.

Well the second tutorial might help you remove the live dash...from v0.1..give it a try.

How can you use tutorial 2 if you cannot FTP in and remove xbox live?

I'm unable to even install evox or use the evox disk because the first time I tried to exploit, it came up with Error 21.
