This is a tough question to answer because people seem to get a whole lot different ftp speeds. The speed depends on many different things. The question is what the bottleneck in your system is.

You could compare FTP transfertimes from the HDD and the drive... If the DVD timings are slower than the timings from the HDD then the FTP speed  probably would gain if a DVD drive with higher reading capacity were used...

As for the question about how fast a modded 616 will read I don't know... Someone else will have to answer that question.

I have a 616t and i did not notice any speed differences...I think the speed is mainly determined by your network setup

I didnt notice an increase in FTP speed because of this drive. I have a - burner. All 3 drives read the - format with no probs. I would hate to have to use 2 discs between me and my kids.

ok.,...  if it's the cable, then the HD would also be slower? uses the same cable.

I can only assume that the weak link is the DVD, as the cable is fine for the HD at about 10,000 kbits per sec, whilst the dvd runs at about 1600 kbits per sec.  If the cable was teh weak link, then they would both be the same speed.

I think that theoretically a 4x dvd will max out at 1600.   way under the xbox ftp capability.

I was hoping that wacking a faster dvd might be benificial, but i guess once you flash it, then it behaves as per the 605...  ie no speed increase...

Anyway....  the disk issue wont be around for long as I got the kids a 80g hard disk, so not much need to interchange disks as such...

Anyway... thanks guys, I might wait till the thomsen dies or i can get a bargain, whichever comes first!

Cheers...

According to http://www.dvdplusrw.org/, the Samaung 616T reads both +R/RW Media.

I have never noticed a speed increase or anything, but mainly since I haven't ever done the DVD to PC directly. One thing I can say though, is that the dvd2xbox copying times have decreased SUBSTANTIALLY. My friend has the Thomson drive, and we usually get together to sync up our xboxes, and his takes way longer to rip a game than mine, so we usually just rip it on mine then ftp it over to his, as it takes less time. FTP speeds are roughly 7000-8000k/sec w/ XB-FTP, and 5000-7000k/sec to the PC, but that's from the HDD, not the DVD.

Maybe someone needs to update the original Xbox firmware so it supports the speeds tof which the drive is capable.  This shouldn't affect the Xbox reading the disks if we made the Xbox think 16x is its normal speed.

Do you have to burn games and files to DVD for the Xbox to read them?  Or can you burn them to CD instead?

I'm talking about the drive firmware.  If when the Xbox sent the signal to run at whatever speed it normally does and the firmware then ran it at 16x anyway you could run it faster.  If the Xbox normally ran at 8x and x is the Xbox speed and d is the drive speed then it could be symbolized like this:

if x = 10
then y = 16

It would only take a little bit of coding to make the firmware do this.

That would be nice indeed.  I remember my Teac CD532S CD-ROM drive had a tool which would modify the firmware to allow higher read speed and DAE speed.   Here for reference.  If I knew how to write/modify firmware, I'd give it a look...
