QUOTE (Mr Ed @ Dec 21 2003, 07:33 PM)
I got mine so long ago I can't even remember where I got it.  It was mail order.  I started at Radio Shack, but they wanted $100US for the features in the Multi-meter I got for around $30 via mail order.  I just wanted it to be able to handle over 15amps.  The one I got handles 20amps.  Haven't shopped for one in a while, but I'd be leery of Radio Shack's prices because of that.

Well, I don't live in the US, so I'm unsure of Radio Shack's prices, I just know that they're the most well known place to buy things like this.

The fact is that one resistance setting may not work for every drive of the same make due to component differences, which is why I'd rather recommend tweaking to an approximate setting with a multimeter, then carefully without a multimeter, testing each time you tweak.

I just got an Xbox with the new Philips DVD drive in it, reads everything I've thrown at it so far, including Memorex 4x DVD-R and 4x DVD+R, all CD-R and CD-RW. I was hoping for a Samsung but this seems just as good!

Edit: The Xbox was manufactured Nov. 3, 2003; v1.5 I think.

I have had 4 of these new philips drives on my hands. They ALL would not read
datatrack, thatswrite or commodore dvd-
It WOULD read ez cd rw no problem. Didnt try cd-r yet.

Even the old thomson drives are better with dvd than the new pos philips drive! Damn.

Besides that i noticed teh make much more noise than the old drives when booting the xbox: tszzzzz klack tszzzzz klack tszzzz or something like that.

Ah well lets keep this pinned for a while and see what happens

I adjusted the left-hand pot to 749 ohms, right-hand pot I left alone.
Plays fine.

Someone told me that when he put the philips drive in a xbox that was modded with an alladin advance the drive worked like a charm! When placed back in the xbox with an x2.3 chip it works like shit. SOldering and stuff is the same!

REcently he also replaced someone shitty philipd drive that wouldnt read shit with a samsung drive. It worked two days. After that the guy came back again with same complaints. Not possible to read dvd-.

Wtf is going on. All these faulty philips drives. Can you all please tell me that all the philips drives that dont work are modified with ex 2.3?

Thx

Hi All,

Be careful when adjusting the POT based on what users have suggested for settings.

As exobex said - ALWAYS measure your POT (should do it several times) before adjusting so as to set it back when need too.

Not all multimetres are the same.  You will notice some different readings from a cheap $10 multimetre as compared to one that hovers around the $100 range.

Some folks have said that their initial reading was around the 1.064K range whilst another said that it was more in the 1.6K range.

This may very well be due to bad probes/leads and or dirty ones.  Heck - even the wire that they are constructed of may differ.  Manufacturers will attempt to adjust their metres to compenstate for these variances - but this is usually good for "out of the box" readings.  In time, they will differ.

It appears that 200-400 ohms less than the original reading has done the trick.  So when you take your initial reading - adjust the POT based on that scale - however, I would suggest in small intervals - perhaps 25-50 ohms.

Best Regards,

I moved the pot as much as from say 11:00 to 5:00 was that too much to smoke it.

Could be. I moved it from 12 to 3, and that was enough to stop games from working. 11 to 5 is the same as 12 to 6! that's a half turn! Far too much!

This is one of the reasons that there are millions of dead PS2's out there.  If you're blindly(no multimeter) trying to do this tweak you're most likely gonna kill it.

Pisses me off seeing all this info on the web saying "Save your PS2 by turning this pot a quarter turn this way", etc.

Save an XBox, buy a Multimeter!!  biggrin.gif

BTW, I'd try to stay away from Radio Shack meters...usually radio shack stuff is total crap.

Try Sears, I believe their better meters are made or engineered by Fluke, the best manufacturer of meters in the business.  I use only Fluke brand meters myself.

biggrin.gif I'm going to buy some DVD-Rs tomorrow and see what happens. The owner of the XBox is now happy and so am I, there was an extra $20 in it for me for 10min of work.

I don't know what the ohms resistance is since I don't have a good multi meter to test it with. But I just turned it ever so slightly 'til it booted a CD-R like it was an original copy of the game.

Oh, the CD-Rs were TDK 700MG.

I just modded a new 1.5 with that has this Philips drive. I took it apart and turned the pot clockwise little by little. At first it didn't want to read any thing but real DVDs. Kept on tweaking it and get it to read DVD+RW, than CD-Rs.  biggrin.gif I'm going to buy some DVD-Rs tomorrow and see what happens. The owner of the XBox is now happy and so am I, there was an extra $20 in it for me for 10min of work.

Did you power off the XBOX each time you made an adjustment or did you adjust it with it powered on?
