Recently, I brought myself a new xbox and got one of those philips drives.  It is actually not as good as my old thompson drives.  I think I will try to do the pot tweeking.  BTW, anybody who brought a new xbox and got a samsung or even a thompson drive instead?

Two consoles, manufactured in China in the end of 2003 (35005). Both have Philips drives.

1st: reads the following CD-R 700MB disks:

1. eProformance 32x (silver top)
2. Infiniti ??x (silver top)
3. Datawrite 48x (white top)
4. Maxell 32x (silver top)
5. Memorex 48x (silver top)

All were burnt with Plextor PlexWriter 40/12/40 and different versions of Nero.

2nd: doesn't read CD-Rs; after few days of use a game boot time went up-to 10 minutes. An owner applied for a guarantee service.

Do not have any technical detailes as both xboxes weren't opened.

hello,

i've tested the x21 and x11 models (old ones) and had no probs with any of my media. today i got a x35 in a crystal box. modded it with aladdin and got the same performance like the x11 and x21. i cant see any difference.
moreover i dont think that the aladdin chip is responsible for any perfomance differences. i guess that there are differences within the x31 models.

edit:

a few hours of working the philips2 didnt accept my dvd+r anymore. i set the left pot to 600 and it works right again. this behavior is really wired, i dont know an explaination for this.

wink.gif )  Others just don't.

Can someone please confirm this theory of the pot's relating to each other. On my DVD Philips drive, V21 this seams to be true. On my neighbours Xbox, i had to tune it, and found out this behaviour between the pot's.  But it could be just a lucky factor. Must be confirmed though.  uhh.gif

Also have a XBOX with the new Philips drive.

Havn't podded it yet, but standard it can read:

80 min CDR-media from

Verbatim (CMC Magnetics Corporation)
Platinum (Moser Baer India Limited)
Datatrack (Plasmon Data Systems)

It can't read:

80 min CDR-media from

Plextor (Taiyo Yuden)
Tybo (Taiyo Yuden)
Mam (Mitsui Chemicals Inc.)

(...) = Manufacturer

I have a Crystall Xbox with Philips DVD drive model: VAD6035/21.
It reads quite well CD-R/RWs and DVD+/-R/RWs (Maxell, Sony, Verbatim...)
Still some discs like Packard Bell DVD-R doesn't work at all and usually DVD-R movies gets stuck!
I've tweaked the DVD drive's left pot but the improvement was only little and the drive still freezes with DVD-R movies.

Here are the drive's pot values:
Before tweaking:
Left pot: 615ohms Right pot: 481ohms
After tweaking:
Left pot: 415ohms Right pot: 481ohms

Any ideas to make the DVD drive working better?!

QUOTE (jtimkey @ Sep 6 2004, 08:26 AM)
Got the older philips drive have been using bulkpaq orange 4x for nearly a year now, but all of a sudden the drive seems to spin up fast then slow down etc.
will run the game ok but very slow and jerky movies scenes etc ??
any ideas ? on its way out ?
seems odd it used to work ok.

I have the exact same prob.
